Ferrari beschouwt zwaardere banden juist als een kans

De banden voor 2021 zijn gezamenlijk 2,8 kilo zwaarder dan wat de banden het afgelopen jaar wogen. Dat heeft bandenleverancier Pirelli bewust gedaan; de huidige Formule 1-wagens genereren zoveel downforce dat de Italiaanse bandenfabrikant het rubber heeft moeten verstevigen om het gevaar van klapbanden te reduceren.

Dit kwam Pirelli op pittige kritiek te staan na de eerste tests met het nieuwe rubber. Bijvoorbeeld van Sebastian Vettel. "Dit is geen progressie, dit is een stap achteruit. Het was het proberen waard, maar ik wil deze banden nooit meer zien of gebruiken. De nieuwe banden zijn slechter dan de banden waar we het afgelopen seizoen mee gereden hebben."

Wereldkampioen Lewis Hamilton sloot zich daar volmondig bij aan. "Pirelli heeft twee jaar de tijd gehad om een betere band te ontwerpen. Nu zijn ze op de proppen gekomen met banden die bijna drie kilo zwaarder zijn, dat scheelt ongeveer een seconde per ronde. Als je na twee jaar ontwikkelen zo'n stap achterwaarts produceert, dan weet ik niet wat er gaande is."

Ferrari

Bij Ferrari denken ze er heel anders over. Sportief directeur Laurent Mekies beschouwt de nieuwe banden juist als een kans voor rijders en teams om zich te onderscheiden. "We weten dat deze band gebouwd is om de veiligheid te garanderen. Niemand kan bezwaar maken tegen meer veiligheid. We willen allemaal de limiet opzoeken zonder na te hoeven denken over eventuele klapbanden. Daar heeft Pirelli naar gehandeld."

"Ja, deze banden bieden minder grip en geen enkele coureur vindt dat leuk. Maar als dat de prijs is die we moeten betalen voor meer veiligheid, het zij zo. Het betekent overigens ook dat de balans van de wagens verandert. Het is aan ons om de rijders zo goed mogelijk te helpen om het optimale uit het rubber te halen. Dat wordt wel een dingetje, daarom zie ik dit ook niet als iets slechts. Integendeel, het kan een factor zijn die van invloed is op de krachtsverhoudingen."

Hopelijk gaat op niet al te lange termijn de trend worden dat de wagens ieder jaar lichter worden, want ze worden nu al jaren achtereen zwaarder en dat maakt het spectakel er niet beter op.

Banden zijn al jaren een probleem in F1.

Oorspronkelijk kwam ik op voor Pirelli die op vraag van de FIA banden in verschillende compounds moest voorzien met een zekere graad van slijtage. Na zoveel jaar van ontwikkeling merken we quasi geen vooruitgang. Niet alleen worden ze zwaarder ze zijn nog steeds niet goed te regelen naar werkingstemperatuur.

In tegenstelling tot wat de oorspronkelijke bedoeling was om met verschillende strategieën goeie races te zien, zien we dezelfde strategie en geen mogelijkheid tot rondenlang close racing.

Dat betreur ik heel erg en hoewel rijders hier nochtans uitgesproken over zijn, teams gaan daar liever niet tegen de stroom in varen wat het moeilijk maakt ol daar verandering in te krijgen Dan maar hopen op 2022 zeker. .. .

  klopt, dat italiaanse rubber is gewoon klote, ik hoor hier zo vaak zeggen, dat is wat de FIA vraagt, NEE het is gewoon bagger.

  Ik denk dat elke bandenfabrikant in staat is om een band te ontwikkelen die maximale grip levert en weinig slijtage geeft. En dat is precies wat je gaat krijgen bij een bandenoorlog. Wat we willen is een band waar je vol op kunt pushen, die 30 rondjes meegaat, en dan uit elkaar valt...

  Destijds sloot Ecclestone een financieel lucratieve deal met (nieuwkomer) Pirelli voor het Brabham team maar dat kostte ze waarschijnlijk een kampioenschap in 85. Zelfde geldt voor zn motoren deal met Alfa Romeo. Prachtwagen en een beer van een motor maar de boxer 12 cylinder stond de ontwikkeling van een wingcar in de weg en de enige optie op grondeffect was de illustere fancar in 79 dacht ik. Het jaar erna hadden ze een Cosworth dacht ik en in 81 pakte Piquet de titel. 82 opgeofferd aan de ontwikkeling van de bmw 4cylinder turbo en in 83 weer een titel, in 84 veel mechanische pech met turbo’s en elektronica. Betrouwbaarheidsproblemen opgelost in 85 maar kans op kampioenschap vergooid met Pirelli. Pirelli was wel nieuwkomer toen, maar toch.

Heeft Mercedes al de prive test gedaan??? Wellicht krijgen we dan een beter beeld van hoe de nieuwe zware sloffen hun werk doen.
