'Australië verschuift naar de herfst, Bahrein seizoensopener'

Het heeft er alle schijn van dat de eerste Grand Prix van het nieuwe Formule 1-seizoen niet in Australië, maar in Bahrein plaats zal vinden. Afgelopen weekend doken daar al de eerste signalen voor op en die signalen worden alleen maar sterker. De Australische Grand Prix voor 21 maart aanstaande staat serieus op losse schroeven.

Door het nog altijd rondwarende coronavirus stelt Australië strenge eisen aan inreizen. Bezoekers moeten na aankomst eerst veertien dagen in quarantaine voordat ze zich vrij door het land mogen bewegen. De organisatie van de race in Melbourne heeft tot uiterlijk eind deze maand de tijd om een beslissing te nemen in verband met de opbouw van het semi-stratencircuit.

Diverse buitenlandse media nemen een voorschot op uitstel voor de Grand Prix van Australië. De race op het circuit van Albert Park wordt mogelijk verschoven naar de herfst; de Formule 1-leiding zou al kijken naar manieren om het evenement ergens in september, oktober of november in het drukke schema in te passen.

De Grand Prix van Bahrein zou in dat geval de rol van seizoensopener op zich nemen, op 28 maart. De kans bestaat dan ook dat de enige wintertest, nu nog van 2 tot en met 4 maart gepland op het Circuit de Catalunya nabij Barcelona, meeverhuist naar het circuit van Sakhir. Een andere optie is dat de Formule 1 toch een tweede testweek inplant in de aanloop naar de Grand Prix in Bahrein.

China

Niet alleen de Grand Prix van Australië, maar ook de Chinese Grand Prix is onzeker. De race staat voor 11 april op het programma, maar verschillende sportevenementen die de komende maanden in China gehouden zouden worden, zijn reeds afgelast of uitgesteld. Mogelijk is het Formule 1-weekend in Sjanghai hetzelfde lot beschoren.

Dit is ook geen verrassing, 2021 zal een zelfde jaar worden als 2020, dat zei ik gelijk al, wees blij als in 2022 alles weer normaal zal zijn, vergeet 2021 maar.
