Total in het niets uit de Formule 1 verdwenen

Total was altijd op veel bolides te bekennen in de Formule 1. De Franse oliemaatschappij is echter in het niets verdwenen uit de koningsklasse van de motorsport. Renault was in 2016 al het laatste team dat samenwerkte met de maatschappij.

In 2013 had Total maar liefst vier teams te voorzien van smeermiddelen en brandstof. Lotus, Williams, Caterham F1 en het Franse Renault waren afnemers van de maatschappij uit Frankrijk. Het merk was 49 jaar actief in de Formule 1, maar besloot zonder enige aankondiging te stoppen met het leveren van de toeveor voor de motor. In 2016 was zelfs Red Bull Racing afnemer van de brandstof.

De oliemaatschappij heeft veel titels als brandstofpartner achter haar naam staan. Zo was het team erg succesvol met Williams, Renault en Red Bull Racing, maar toch besloten ze niet door te gaan met de Formule 1.

2020

Tegenwoordig zijn er in 2021 vijf oliemaatschappijen in de Formule 1 actief, in 2020 waren dit er maar vier. McLaren zal namelijk overstappen op Gulf, die waren afgelopen seizoen nog afhankelijk van BP-Castrol. Dit kwam vooral door de Renault-motor, want het Franse team gebruikte zelf ook die brandstof en smeermiddelen.

Ferrari gebruikt Shell-brandstof evenals smeermiddelen. Het Italiaanse team gebruikt al eeuwen de brandstof van de oliemaatschappij. Shell is een grote leverancier in de Formule 1, want naast Ferrari nemen ook Alfa Romeo en Haas, brandstof af van Shell. Ferrari levert ook motoren aan de teams, dus het is logisch dat de teams de brandstofleverancier ook gebruiken voor de beste prestaties uit de motor.

Mercedes gebruikt brandstof en smeermiddelen van Petronas. De leverancier gevestigd in Maleisië levert niet alleen aan het Duitse team. Ook de teams die een Mercedes-motor gebruiken, nemen de brandstofleverancier over. Williams en Aston Martin (was Racing Point), gebruiken ook deze brandstof. McLaren krijgt in 2021 ook een krachtbron van Mercedes, maar door de samenwerking met Gulf gebruiken ze niet de aanbevolen Petronas smeermiddelen en brandstof.

Red Bull Racing en Alpha Tauri maken gebruik van een Honda-krachtbron. De teams gebruiken Esso, onder de naam van ExxonMobil.

  En Esso was gewoon op de auto(wing end plate van de achtervleugel) en overalls(mouw) te zien en staat ook nog steeds als partner op de website van Red Bull

Uit het niets verdwenen?
Ik wil niet op alle slakken zout leggen maar dit is toch wel vreemd. Mobil en Esso zitten nu dus niet meer in het niets?

Total verdwenen is wel een bizarre wending. Total heeft namelijk dochteronderneming ELF hernoemd naar de Total naam. Dus als je kijkt dat voor Total, ELF dus hét merk was, dan gaat de link met Formule 1 terug tot de vroege jaren 70.

Uit het persbericht van McLaren:
From 2021, Gulf will become the preferred lubricant supplier to McLaren Automotive, with all cars to be filled with Gulf Oil and fuel optimised for high performance engines.

In het hele bericht staat niets dat Gulf in de F1 auto's gaat.

  Klopt Pietje. De Mercedes motor is afgestemd op motor olie en brandstof van Petronas en dat is niet eenvoudig om zomaar om te zetten. Petrobras was van 2014 tot en met 2017 sponsor en brandstof leverancier bij Williams met uitzondering van de Mercedes F1 motor. Die draaide op Petronas brandstof.
