Button over racen in 2020: "Ik had een paar tests met McLaren gepland staan"

Het coronavirus heeft vanaf het eind van 2019 veel teweeg gebracht in de wereld, en dit werd uiteraard ook in de Formule 1 gemerkt. Zo kende het 2020-seizoen een hele andere opstelling dan gebruikelijk. Ook voor coureurs had dit een impact, en sommige coureurs konden zelfs races niet meerijden. Jenson Button had, bijvoorbeeld, serieuze plannen om weer te gaan racen op een hoog niveau, maar het coronavirus maakte dit niet mogelijk.

In een interview met Motorsport News liet Button weten dat hij in 2020 een aantal Indycar-races zou gaan rijden met McLaren. McLaren zou een partnerschap zijn aangegaan met Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, en Button heeft nog steeds goede connecties met zijn vorige team.

"Het was de bedoeling dat ik een aantal tests met McLaren zou doen, maar COVID maakte dit niet mogelijk", zo vertelt Jenson. "Het eerste evenement was gecanceld, en de tweede was tussen de twee Grands Prix van Oostenrijk in. Ik miste dus deze kans, en dat is erg jammer want het was de bedoeling dat ik alle niet-ovale races zou rijden", aldus de Formule 1-wereldkampioen van 2009.
