Enige wintertest van 12 tot en met 14 maart in Bahrein

De Formule 1, de internationale autosportbond FIA en de teams hebben overeenstemming bereikt over een verplaatsing van de enige test ter voorbereiding op het nieuwe seizoen van Barcelona naar Bahrein. Dit is een gevolg van het besluit om de Australische Grand Prix uit te stellen.

Daardoor luidt de Grand Prix van Bahrein op 28 maart aanstaande de nieuwe jaargang in en is het voor de Formule 1 en de teams logischer om ook de enige wintertest op het circuit van Sakhir plaats te laten vinden. Deze testsessie staat nu gepland van 12 tot en met 14 maart.

Discussie

Over die datum is nog wel wat discussie geweest. Het idee is geopperd om het weekend voor de Grand Prix te testen in Bahrein, zodat al het personeel en de teams gewoon in het oliestaatje kunnen blijven voor de race van een week later. Alleen McLaren stemde tegen, schrijft Autosport.

De reglementen schrijven voor dat er minstens tien dagen tussen de laatste testdag en het begin van het eerste Grand Prix-weekend moeten zitten. McLaren wilde daar niet aan morrelen. De Britse renstal denkt de extra tijd goed te kunnen gebruiken om het nieuwe pakket te doorgronden.

Over het algemeen zijn de wagens voor komend seizoen een doorontwikkeling van de auto's van vorig jaar. De regels zijn immers nauwelijks gewijzigd, ook om kosten te besparen. Alleen stapt McLaren over op een andere motorleverancier - Mercedes in plaats van Renault - en daar verandert dus wel het nodige. Het is dan ook begrijpelijk dat het team uit Woking zoveel mogelijk tijd wil spenderen aan het optimaliseren van die overgang.

Valt best mee. Eerst krijgen we nog 6 weken een harde lockdown ( inclusief protesten) en avondklok terwijl er ondertussen een burgeroorlog uitbreekt in Amerika. Als alle hectiek een beetje over is het half maart en begint de F1 weer.

Het zal heel belangrijk zijn om onmiddellijk de wagen te evalueren. Geen tijd en ruimte voor foute correlaties maar vooral de nieuwe banden op het nieuwe pakket aan de praat te krijgen Dit kan voor de eerste race wel verrassingen inhouden......

  Is het niet zo dat ze voor dit jaar juist de aerodynamica met name van de vloer moeten aanpassen zodat de huidige banden het niet zo zwaar hebben?
  Dus dat zou betekenen dat ze de huidige banden blijven gebruiken

  @Yves02 De vloer was niet genoeg - oa ook de brakeducts en diffuser dienden aangepast om de downforce naar beneden te krijgen. Minimum gewicht motor is nu 150kg ipv 145kg
  
  Daarnaast hebben ze toch nieuwe banden ontworpen (!) omwille van een te zwakke structuur zoals we onder andere in de UK zagen. Pirelli is van oordeel dat de teams een groot stuk van de verloren performantie zullen terugvinden met hetzelfde gevolg. Die nieuwe banden worden door de sterkere structuur een stuk zwaarder maar kunnen dan weer onder lagere druk worden gereden. Gevolg zwaardere wagens lagere downforce en compleet andere bandkarakteristieken. 2021 is daardoor een compleet ander jaar als 2020 en geen "eenvoudige" evolutie.
  
  Om het beste uit de banden te halen is geen sinecure. MB moet het daarbij zonder hun DAS doen wat het voor hen extra lastig maakt. Met slechts 3 dagen om deze te testen "on track" met hun nieuwe wagens is wel erg kort. De teams hebben pas laat de beschikking gekregen over dat zwarte "goud" voor hun simulators dus dat maakt het zeker niet gemakkelijk.
