Grand Prix van China voor 2021 op de reservelijst geplaatst

Er zal dit jaar alleen een Chinese Grand Prix plaatsvinden als er nog iets gebeurt met een van de andere races op de Formule 1-kalender voor 2021. Dat valt op te maken uit de woorden van Formule 1-directeur Stefano Domenicali. De koningsklasse van de autosport presenteerde begin deze week een herziene kalender voor komend seizoen, zonder Grand Prix van China.

Op het schema was nog wel één plekje vrijgelaten, maar het is niet logisch om tussen Grands Prix in Italië en Spanje een verre reis naar Sjanghai in te plannen. De verwachting is dat Portimao de kalender voor 2021 gaat complementeren. De Formule 1 is niet van plan om het aantal races, dat met 23 Grands Prix al hoog ligt, verder te verhogen om ruimte te creëren voor de Chinese Grand Prix.

Kortom, China organiseert dit jaar alleen een Formule 1-race als bij een van de andere Grands Prix het noodlot toeslaat. Domenicali: "We blijven met onze Chinese collega's werken om een oplossing te vinden om daar te racen in 2021. Mocht er nog iets veranderen aan de kalender voor komend seizoen, dan nemen we contact met hen op."
