Alex Zanardi kan weer praten met zijn familie

Alex Zanardi, die vorig jaar juni betrokken was bij een ernstig handbike-ongeluk, kan volgens berichten vanuit Italië weer praten. De voormalige F1-coureur raakte na het incident in coma tijdens een handbike-race in Siena waarbij hij in botsing kwam met een vrachtwagen.

Hij leed aan levensbedreigend hoofdletsel en onderging verschillende periodes van neurologische chirurgie. De 54-jarige was aanvankelijk in het universiteitsziekenhuis van Siena voordat hij werd overgebracht naar een revalidatiekliniek in de buurt van Como. Toen zijn toestand verslechterde werd Zanardi overgebracht naar de intensive care in een ziekenhuis in Milaan en daarna, nadat hij lichamelijk en neurologisch stabiel was geworden, naar een andere kliniek dicht bij zijn huis in Padua.

Nu is bekend gemaakt dat de ex-Jordan, Minardi, Lotus en Williams F1-coureur niet alleen zijn gezichtsvermogen en gehoor heeft teruggekregen, maar ook mensen kan herkennen en dus ook weer kan communiceren door te praten.

"Het was een geweldige emotie toen hij begon te praten, niemand geloofde het. Hij was daar, hij communiceerde met zijn familie", vertelde neuropsycholoog Federica Alemanno, die tijdens zijn herstel veel tijd met Zanardi heeft doorgebracht, tegen Corriere della Sera.

Net voor Kerstmis meldde dezelfde krant dat Zanardi in staat was om in een hand te knijpen, zijn duim op te steken om 'oké' aan te geven en zijn hoofd naar zijn vrouw Daniela te draaien als hem daarom werd gevraagd.

Zanardi, wiens beste F1-resultaat de zesde positie was voor Lotus in de Braziliaanse Grand Prix van 1993, genoot het meeste succes als coureur in de C ART-serie in Noord-Amerika en werd kampioen in 1997 en 1998.

Na zijn terugkeer in de F1 voor een enkel, onproductief seizoen bij Williams in 1999, werd zijn carrière in de autosport twee jaar later beëindigd door een gruwelijke crash op de Lausitzring in een CART-kampioenschapsrace waarbij zijn beide benen werden geamputeerd.

Sindsdien heeft Zanardi aanzienlijke successen behaald als para-wielrenner, met het winnen van vier gouden Paralympische medailles en 12 wereldkampioenschappen.
