Officieel: Jenson Button verbindt zich als adviseur aan Williams

Oud Formule 1-coureur Jenson Button gaat het team van Williams van adviezen voorzien. De Brit heeft een meerjarige overeenkomst gesloten om de rol van adviseur te bekleden bij de Britse renstal. Button is geen onbekende voor Williams; Williams is het team waarvoor de wereldkampioen van 2009 in 2000 zijn debuut in de Formule 1 maakte.

Nu keert hij terug op het oude nest. Button zal Williams in 2021 bij meerdere Grands Prix bijstaan als adviseur en daarnaast opdraven voor sponsor- en mediaverplichtingen. De Brit gaat zijn werkzaamheden voor het team combineren met zijn rol als analist bij de Britse zender Sky Sports F1. Hij neemt een schat aan autosportervaring met zich mee naar Williams.

Button: "Ik ben verguld om mede te kunnen delen dat ik weer bij Williams getekend heb. Toen ik op mijn 19de tekende voor mijn Formule 1-moment, was het een moment dat mijn leven veranderde. Dat was meer dan twintig jaar geleden, maar toch voelt het alsof ik nooit weggeweest ben. Frank Williams had vertrouwen in me en daar ben ik hem eeuwig dankbaar voor. Nu krijg ik de kans om terug te keren en het team te helpen in hun jacht op nieuwe successen. Dat vergt veel hard werk, maar ik twijfel er niet aan dat Williams een mooie toekomst tegemoet gaat. Ik kan niet wachten om te beginnen."

De aanstaande Williams-directeur Jost Capito voegt toe: "De komst van Jenson vertegenwoordigt een volgende positieve stap voor ons team, zowel op als naast de baan. Jenson is altijd een vriend van het team gebleven en het is geweldig om hem weer bij de Williams-familie te verwelkomen. Frank Williams zag in hem een ruwe diamant en gaf hem een eerste kans in de Formule 1. Hij heeft het vervolgens helemaal waargemaakt, met de wereldtitel als kroon op het werk. Hij begeeft zich nu onder meer in de zaken- en televisiewereld en geldt als een gerespecteerd figuur in de paddock. Met al die ervaring voegt hij een nieuwe laag toe aan onze organisatie. Het doet ons deugd om weer met Jenson samen te kunnen werken."

Williams heeft afgelopen jaren veel kritiek ontvangen maar sinds Dorilton aan het roer is bij Williams gaat het wat betreft veranderingen de goede kant. Ook dit zie ik als een juiste stap om weer voorruit te komen.

Ik heb de afgelopen jaren de uitspraken van Jenson een beetje gevolgd en viel mij op dat hij eigenlijk weinig blijk gaf van een goede slimme kijk hebben op dingen. Nooit onder de indruk geweest wat dat betreft.
Ik zie deze announcement daarom meer als een promotie stuntje van Williams.

Button de rijder die een contract van Williams had voor 2005/2006 en vervolgens bij BAR bleef omdat dat contract werd aangevochten.

2005 reed die voor BAR en in 2006 wilde jenson niet naar Williams. Uiteindelijk kocht BAR zijn contract uit.

  Klopt Button wilde de overstap niet meer maken in 2006 omdat BMW vertrokken was bij Williams. Dat geintje heeft BAR en Button 30 miljoen gekost.

  Klopt, terwijl button eigenlijk in 2005 al zou rijden voor Williams. Hij had een twee jarig contract.
  
  In 2001 had hij ook nig een contract bij Williams terwijl die bij benneton reed.
  
  Je kan wel spreken van een soort haat liefde verhouding tussen button en Williams
