Marcus Armstrong heeft voor het eerst in zijn leven met een Formule 1-bolide gereden. De jonge Nieuw-Zeelander kwam in actie op de eerste dag van de vijfdaagse testweek van Ferrari op het circuit van Fiorano. Rond 11.00 uur nam hij het stuur over van Giuliano Alesi, die de sessie met de SF71H uit 2018 had afgetrapt.

Armstrong: "Dit was een speciale dag voor mij en eigenlijk ging het precies zoals ik verwacht had. Dat betekent echter niet dat ik er niet van genoten heb. Voor het eerst een Formule 1-auto besturen is al iets magisch. Dat het dan ook nog een Ferrari was, maakt het helemaal onvergetelijk. Men zegt altijd dat de remkracht het meest indrukwekkende aspect van de Formule 1 is en dat was ook zeker zo, maar ook de aerodynamische downforce, de snelheid in de bochten, het sturen, het vermogen en de perfecte wisseling tussen versnellingen zijn van een andere planeet ten opzichte van andere raceklasses."

Robert Shwartzman mocht de laatste uurtjes van de testdag voor zijn rekening nemen. De Rus had vorig jaar al met de SF71H getest en Ferrari had hem ook ingezet bij de Young Drivers-test na afloop van het seizoen in Abu Dhabi. Voor hem was het dus geen nieuwe ervaring. "Rijden met een Formule 1-wagen is altijd een voorrecht en ik moet toegeven dat ik het gevoel al begon te missen. Nu is het tijd om me weer op het Formule 2-kampioenschap te focussen, maar ik hoop dat Ferrari me snel weer de mogelijkheid biedt om voor hen te testen", aldus Shwartzman.
