Nieuwe Alfa Romeo-baas geen voorstander van dure autosport

Alfa Romeo heeft sinds vorige week een nieuwe directeur. Na de fusie tussen Fiat Chrysler Automobiles en Groupe Peugeot SA heeft Carlos Tavares het voor het zeggen bij Stellantis - de naam van het fusiebedrijf. Hij schoof Jean-Phillipe Imperato van Peugeot door naar Alfa Romeo. En dat heeft mogelijk consequenties voor de aanwezigheid van het Italiaanse merk in de Formule 1, stelt Racingfans.net.

Imperato bezuinigde immers alle autosportactiviteiten van Peugeot weg en kon pas overgehaald worden om het nieuwe WEC-project te steunen nadat beloofd was dat dit niet meer dan 30 miljoen euro zou kosten. In 2019 liet hij zich tegenover Autocar al ontglippen: "200 miljoen euro vragen voor een autosportprogramma is gekkenwerk. We wenden onze middelen de komende drie jaar liever aan voor andere activiteiten. Daarna zien we wel. Autosport is ten dode opgeschreven tenzij het elektrisch is."

Niet echt de woorden die hoop bieden voor een langere aanwezigheid van Alfa Romeo in de Formule 1. De Italiaanse autofabrikant is als naamgever verbonden aan het team van Sauber, maar dat contract loopt na dit jaar af. Dat roept vragen op over de toekomst van de Zwitserse renstal, wat ook geruchten over een overstap naar Renault als motorleverancier in de hand werkte. Racefans.net bericht dat nooit serieus is overwogen om Ferrari in te wisselen voor Renault.

Maserati

Desalniettemin is het zeer de vraag of Alfa Romeo actief blijft in de Formule 1. Een andere mogelijkheid is om het team om te dopen tot Maserati, dat ook onder Stellantis valt. Geen van de andere merken van het fusiebedrijf komt in aanmerking om de rol van Alfa Romeo over te nemen. De naam wijzigen in Maserati is echter nog lang geen voldongen feit.

Zo is Maserati een merk dat in hetzelfde marktsegment opereert als Ferrari, en dat ziet Ferrari-voorzitter John Elkann niet zitten. Met Alfa Romeo heeft hij geen problemen, omdat de Italiaanse autofabrikanten ieder een ander publiek aanspreken. Alfa Romeo staat daarentegen nu onder leiding van een directeur die geen fan van dure autosportprogramma's is.

Kortom, de toekomst van het team van Sauber is zeer ongewis. De Zwitserse renstal zou ook nog eens te koop staan en Stellantis zou een overnamebod overwegen, om vervolgens verder te gaan op dezelfde voet - onder welke naam dan ook. Wordt ongetwijfeld vervolgd.

Een pasgeboren kind is ook ten dode opgeschreven. De toekomst mag dan misschien niet fossiel zijn, we gaan het toch nog wel een tijdje moeten doen met hybride. Tijd zat om zich sterk te profileren via F1 met Alfa Romeo. De fusie heeft toch een commercieel paradepaardje nodig?

  Ik denk dat na de afronding van de fusie met Groupe PSA er weinig activiteit overblijft voor Alfa in sport. Maserati doet al zo weinig dat het mij een raadsel is waarom dit nog bestaat... een verwaarloost kind van FIAT. Misschien dat PSA hier grote plannen voor heeft gezien het hun eerste merk is in dit segment.

En hij heeft zoveel merken met een enorme race historie onder zich: Fiat, Opel, Chrysler, DS, Jeep, Lancia (OK, die heeft met de Delta Integrale dan nog een beroemd/vergane glorie type), RAM, Vauxhall, Peugeot, Abarth. Zou toch zonde zijn als die zich allemaal uit de racerij terugtrokken omdat het zo duur is. ;-)
Eigenlijk alleen Alfa, Maserati en Dodge horen van de 14 merken in het rijtje 'autoracehistorie' thuis.
Wij van Driehoek groene zeep vinden WC-eend maar niks.

Ik zeg Sauber verkopen aan VW/Audi en dan kunnen zij gaan racen onder de naam Lamborghini.
Audi levert de motoren en het merendeel van de techniek en het is een mooie marketing om het merk Lamborghini wat meer onder de aandacht te brengen.
Moeten ze nog wel even een motor inkopen of zelf gaan bouwen... Een Lambo met een Ferrari motor dan maar? Vanaf 2025 kunnen ze dan met een eigen motor instappen als de nieuwe regels van kracht worden.

  Waarom zou Ferrari VW/Audi (met Lambo) in godsnaam willen uitrusten met een Ferrariblok? F1 is geen minzame sprookjeswereld. Enzo komt uit zijn graf gekropen om de opportunisten in hun kloten te stampen. Zoals Tyla weet, kleeft er een onherstelbare historie aan deze beide iconische automerken.

Beetje vreemde opmerking van iemand die zelf amateur racer is en diverse klassieke auto's bezit etc.. Gaat Alfa dan straks ook stoppen met het maken van "onzinnige" auto's als de Guilia GTA etc? Een CEO die zulke uitspraken doet is Alfa Romeo onwaardig imho..

Ik begrijp niet waarom sommige mensen vanuit een soort van misplaatste politieke correctheid nog steeds denken dat racen in b.v. de Formule 1 een voorbeeldfunctie of wat dan ook moet hebben voor hoe autotechniek etc voor normale straatauto's zou moeten zijn.. Het is pure entertainment dat compleet los staat van normale straatauto's etc.. Wat mij betreft blijft F1 o.a. altijd met luidruchtige ICE motoren rijden omdat dat nou eenmaal onderdeel van de show is, de huidige veel stillere hybride motoren vind ik al niks..

  De CEO van Merc heeft in diverse interviews aangegeven dat F1 nog steeds zeer relevant is voor straatauto's van Merc. Vooral omdat zij zich niet volledig (kunnen) gaan focussen op Full Electric, maar meer op Hybride i.c.m. schone brandstoffen. In een recent interview heeft hij hierover het volgende gezegd:
  
  "Ik twijfel er niet aan dat de Formule 1 kan helpen om de doelstellingen uit het klimaatakkoord van Parijs waar te maken." De Zweed heeft zelf een tijdje op de High Performance Powertrain-afdeling van Mercedes in Brixworth gewerkt en met eigen ogen de razendsnelle ontwikkeling van met name de batterijen voor de hybride-motoren kunnen aanschouwen.
  
  Elektrificatie is dan ook iets waar de Formule 1 mee verder moet, vindt hij. "De Formule 1 is het beste van beide werelden; de ultieme test voor nieuwe technologieën en een fantastisch en opwindend spektakel dat het merk in vervoering brengt. Het is fascinerend, het is emotie en het draait om hardcore technologie. De push voor elektrificatie en verder gaan dan we nu al doen in de Formule 1 kan onze straatauto-divisie enorm helpen. AMG gaat de hybride-technologie in onze hele vloot al een impuls geven, geïnspireerd door de Formule 1."
