'Nico Hülkenberg aarzelt over DTM-avontuur vanwege Formule 1'

Nico Hülkenberg staat hoog op het verlanglijstje van DTM-baas Gerhard Berger, maar de Duitser is vooralsnog niet bereid om zich aan die klasse te verbinden. F1-Insider.com bericht dat hij aarzelt omdat hij beschikbaar wil blijven voor het geval er openingen ontstaan in de Formule 1.

Afgelopen seizoen mocht Hülkenberg ook drie keer instappen bij Racing Point als vervanger van de zieke Sergio Perez en Lance Stroll. In die optredens deed hij het meer dan naar behoren, maar toch resulteerde het niet in een contract voor 2021. Hülkenberg zit weer in de wachtkamer.

Gerhard Berger ruikt daardoor zijn kans en zou de Duitser graag in de DTM willen zien racen. Alleen durft Hülkenberg die keuze nog niet te maken. Hij is bang dat een DTM-avontuur hem misschien te veel afleidt van zijn doel en dat is dat hij klaar wil staan zodra zich een kans in de Formule 1 aandient.

De DTM heeft ook een oogje laten vallen op een andere oud Formule 1-coureur, namelijk niemand minder dan Jacques Villeneuve. "Jacques zou perfect in ons concept passen. Het is echter een kwestie van financiering. Iedereen is op zoek naar sponsors", aldus Gerhard Berger.

    Alhoewel ik een Nico-fan ben, is het denk ik klaar voor hem in de F1. Ieder team heeft wel zijn reservecoureur nu mocht er iemand uitvallen om wat voor reden dan ook. Kortom, ga lekker de DTM in, Nico!

    Ik zou toch nog maar even aan de zijlijn blijven staan aangezien de kans realistisch is dat hier en daar een coureur een positieve PCR test zal hebben. En dan sta JIJ klaar om in te vallen.

      Het zal wel aan mij liggen, maar ik snap Hulkenberg niet. Hij zei in augustus 2020:

      "I personally do not see myself in the role of reserve driver. I sat in a race cockpit for ten years and stood at the start lights, so accepting a step backwards without much chance of getting back in makes little sense to me. That's not the path I want to take."

      Dus een rol als reserve is een stap terug, maar geheel zonder zitje langs de zijlijn staan niet. Juist ja.

      RogerZzz@ ik begrijp het ook niet zo. Als je geen Indycar wil doen en de WEC plekken zijn op... Waarom niet proberen leuk geld te verdienen in Japan met Superformula... Ik denk dat hij daar het talent voor heeft om een cultheld te worden! De seizoenen zijn niet heel lang dus mooi genieten van de vrije weken in Duitsland.

      Ja, ik snap het ook niet. Die gast is hartstikke snel en heeft een mooie en succesvolle carrière, maar het is ook een keer klaar in de F1.

      Hij behoort niet tot de absolute buitencategorie en 10 jaar is langer dan menig subtopper vol houdt en laten we wel wezen, het niveau van Massa, Raikkonen of Rosberg heeft hij nooit weten te halen.

    Nee niet doen Nico. DTM zal de komende tijd waarschijnlijk zijn glans en prestige verliezen.

    Het zal vast een heel mooi sprint-GT kampioenschap worden, maar het unieke wat je alleen DTM en Super GT hebt zal er vanaf gaan. Het zal eerder een beetje zoals de Blancpain GT Series Sprint Cup worden, met wat grote namen en wat technische aanpassingen en regelementair.

    Ik denk dat Nico even moet wachten met DTM totdat ze uit hun "doorstart" periode heen zijn, en het weer in een nieuw jasje haar prestige en authenticiteit terug heeft, zeker als hij het F1 deurtje graag nog even openhoudt.

    Hulkenberg kan beter naar een kampioenschap zoeken wat zoveel mogelijk niet in conflict is met de F1 kalender. Maar dat zal heel erg moeilijk worden, zeker als het opnieuw een "corona kalender" wordt.

    Overigens heel erg jammer dat Nico geen kans krijgt in een team, na hij indruk maakte afgelopen jaar met zijn invalbeurten.

    Had Nico 10x liever in F1 gehad dan een Mazepin... maarjaaa...
