De naam Aston Martin keert komend seizoen terug op de Formule 1-grid. Het Britse merk is sinds vorig jaar deels eigendom van Lawrence Stroll en de Canadese zakenman was ook al eigenaar van Racing Point. Die twee zijn voor 2021 bij elkaar gebracht, resulterend in Aston Martin F1 Team.

Het is voor het eerst sinds 1960 dat Aston Martin met een eigen team opduikt in de Formule 1. De afgelopen jaren was het Britse merk als sponsor verbonden aan Red Bull Racing, maar een eigen renstal is wel even iets anders. Al blijft het natuurlijk Racing Point met alleen een andere naam.

Dat was eind jaren vijftig van de vorige eeuw wel anders. Na succes in de lange afstands-racerij wilde Aston Martin het ook in de Formule 1 proberen en ontwikkelde daarvoor de DBR4. Een succes werd het niet; in een handvol optredens die voor het kampioenschap meetelden scoorden ze in 1959 en 1960 geen punten.

In een nieuwe video blikt Aston Martin terug op die korte geschiedenis in de Formule 1 en toont de Britse renstal de DBR4 in actie. Tussen neus en lippen door verklappen ze ook nog dat de livery voor komend seizoen definitief groen zal zijn, British Racing Green keert terug op de grid.

Ze zijn niet bij elkaar gebracht en AM doet dan ook niet mee met een eigen team, ze sponsoren. Het is feitelijk net als wat Alfa doet bij Sauber.

"To be competing with the world's great car brands"; voilà, en daarom zal een team als Red Bull altijd minder zijn dan Ferrari, McLaren en in mindere mate Renault en inmiddels ook weer Mercedes. Niemand stapt in de F1 om de strijd aan te gaan met een frisdrankboertje - hoe snel zijn auto's ook zijn.

  Daar heb je gelijk in. Maar men doet -zeker in Nederland- weleens schamper over het belang van de aanwezigheid van klassieke renstallen - zeker wanneer het gaat om de verdeling van de prijzengelden en loyaliteitsbonussen.
  
  Dan is een dergelijk filmpje een goede reminder waarom een dreigement van Red Bull om te vertrekken uit de sport minder indruk maakt als wanneer Ferrari dat doet (hoewel ik er ook weleens moe van wordt als zij dat paard weer eens van stal haalt).

  Er is niets mis met loyaliteitsbonussen. Er is wel iets mis als het ene team zijn loyailteitsbonus even hoog is als een ander team zijn prijzengeld voor een top 3 - plaats bij de constructeurs. Of als die bonus hoger is dan een jaarbudget van een ander team (zoals het verschillende jaren geweest is). Daar struikelen mensen over.

  Ja en nee. Alfa Romeo is enkel een sponsor: Alfa betaalt geld voor stickers op de Sauber.
  
  De eigenaren van Racing Point hebben ook aan groot aandeel in Aston Martin Lagonda.
  
  Daarnaast hebben ook Daimler én Toto Wolff een belang in Aston Martin Lagonda en rijdt Racing Point rond met Mercedes-motoren.
  
  Daar mag je uiteraard van alles van vinden, maar het geeft in ieder geval aan dat de band wel een stukje inniger is. ;-)
