Kimi Raikkonen haalt nog altijd veel plezier uit de Formule 1

Alfa Romeo-coureur Kimi Raikkonen begint in maart aan zijn negentiende seizoen in de Formule 1. De 41-jarige Fin debuteerde twintig jaar geleden namens Sauber in de koningsklasse van de autosport en heeft inmiddels 329 Grand Prix-starts achter zijn naam staan. Hoewel hij bij McLaren en Ferrari gewend was om in de top mee te doen, vindt hij het niet erg om nu onderdeel uit te maken van een achterhoedeteam.

Sterker nog, Raikkonen geniet ook bij Alfa Romeo nog steeds van de Formule 1. Dat is ook de voornaamste reden dat de wereldkampioen van 2007 door blijft gaan. Aan het blad Formule 1 liet hij weten: "Als ik het niet leuk meer zou vinden, zou ik stoppen. Dat lijkt me logisch. Dan zou ik mijn tijd niet verdoen met de wereld rondreizen. Dat is voor mij dé voorwaarde om door te gaan: dat ik het leuk vind."

De Fin haalt nu vooral veel voldoening uit de samenwerking met zijn engineers en het proces om het pakket te verbeteren en optimaliseren, aangezien de resultaten niet altijd meer om over naar huis te schrijven zijn. "Van alles dat ertoe dient om de auto sneller te maken, of zelf beter te rijden. Dát is waarom ik het nog doe en waarom ik door wil blijven gaan", aldus Raikkonen.

Hij vervolgt: "Zelfs als je voor een topteam rijdt, is er geen garantie dat je races kan winnen. De afgelopen seizoenen zijn namelijk gedomineerd door één team en hebben de andere achttien auto’s weinig kans gehad. Dus ja, soms win je races en soms niet, maar het is überhaupt zeldzaam. Ik geniet hoe dan ook nog van het rijden en het werk."

Tja, ik weet het niet. Ik geloof best dat hij er nog lol in heeft, maar of dat genoeg is? Die Alfa Romeo is een rampenwagen, en zoals in 2020 het seizoen eindigen met 8 punten is een blamage. Blijkbaar slaagt ook hij er niet in het lek boven water te krijgen.
