Gianluca Petecof verlaat het opleidingsprogramma van Ferrari

Gianluca Petecof maakt niet langer onderdeel uit van de Ferrari Driver Academy. De 18-jarige Braziliaan heeft het nieuws zelf via Instagram naar buiten gebracht. Ferrari voegde Petecof eind 2017 toe aan het opleidingsprogramma en de voorbije drie seizoenen kwam hij in verschillende raceklasses uit voor Prema.

In de Formule 4 leidde dat tot wisselende resultaten, met een tweede plaats in het Italiaans kampioenschap in 2019 als positieve uitschieter. Vorig jaar reed Petecof in het Europees kampioenschap Formula Regional en daarin won hij de titel. Het is onduidelijk of het zijn eigen beslissing is geweest om de Ferrari Driver Academy te verlaten of dat het opgelegd is door de leiding van Ferrari.

In een verklaring stelt Petecof: "Ik kondig hierbij aan dat ik de samenwerking met de Ferrari Driver Academy niet voort zal zetten in 2021. De oogst uit mijn eerste drie seizoenen racen in Europa bestaat uit tien zeges, tien pole positions, een Formule Regional-titel en 40 punten voor mijn superlicentie."

"Ik ben gegroeid als coureur en als persoon. Het voelt goed dat we dit hoofdstuk af hebben kunnen sluiten met een kampioenschap. Ik ben iedereen binnen Ferrari dankbaar voor alle steun. Nu is het tijd voor een nieuw hoofdstuk en ik ben hongeriger dan ooit", besluit de Braziliaan. Het is nog niet bekend wat hij nu gaat doen.

Ferrari bulkt momenteel van de talenten en deze goede jongen beseft dat hij met Ferrari waarschijnlijk de formule 1 niet gaat halen. Ik ben benieuwd hoe zijn carrière verder gaat verlopen
