Ferrari zegt Callum Ilott aantal vrijdagtrainingen toe voor 2021

Callum Ilott mag zich verheugen op meerdere vrijdagtrainingen in 2021. Die belofte deed Ferrari-teambaas Mattia Binotto in ieder geval op Formula1.com. Voor welk team Ilott zal rijden en waar, dat wordt later bekendgemaakt. Ferrari beschikt met Haas F1 Team en Alfa Romeo over twee klantenteams waar ze de jonge Brit meer ervaring op kunnen laten doen.

Een schrale troost voor Ilott, die vorig jaar als tweede in het Formule 2-kampioenschap eindigde. Hij zag kampioen Mick Schumacher en de lager geklasseerde Yuki Tsunoda en Nikita Mazepin wel de stap naar de Formule 1 maken, maar voor hem zat het er niet in. Ilott moest genoegen nemen met een testrol bij Ferrari, maar dus wel inclusief een aantal vrijdagtrainingen.

Binotto over de situatie van de rijders die Ferrari ondersteunt: "Mick Schumacher maakt komend seizoen zijn debuut in de Formule 1 bij Haas F1. We hebben ook nog jonge rijders die uitkomen in de Formule 2, zoals bijvoorbeeld Robert Shwartzman. En dan is er nog Callum Ilott, die onze testcoureur is, veelvuldig in de simulator plaats zal nemen en een aantal vrijdagtrainingen zal doen."

Ilott kreeg vorige week een voorproefje van zijn werkzaamheden bij Ferrari. Aan het einde van een vijfdaagse testweek met een auto uit 2018 zette de Scuderia hem in voor de laatste middag. De Brit reed rond de 50 ronden over het circuit van Fiorano.
