Formule 1 benaderd door promotors voor Grand Prix in Afrika

De kans bestaat dat toekomstige Formule 1-kalenders weer een evenement in Afrika zullen bevatten. De koningsklasse van de autosport is al sinds 1993 niet meer naar dat continent afgereisd. Afrika is naast Antarctica het enige continent dat jaarlijks schittert door afwezigheid op het Formule 1-schema. Daar kan de komende jaren verandering in komen, bekende Stefano Domenicali.

De nieuwe Formule 1-directeur gaf tegenover Racefans.net toe dat de interesse vanuit Afrika voor een Grand Prix groeiende is. "Dan gaat het om een mogelijke race in het noorden van Afrika of in Zuid-Afrika, dat is het enige dat ik erover kan zeggen. Het is belangrijk voor de Formule 1 om nieuwe locaties te omarmen of terug te gaan naar een locatie waar een deel van de geschiedenis van de sport ligt", verwijst Domenicali naar het Zuid-Afrikaanse circuit van Kyalami.

Hij ging ook in op de mogelijkheid voor een tweede Grand Prix in de Verenigde Staten, met Miami als belangrijke gegadigde. Domenicali: "Onze strategie voor de toekomst is om meer aanwezig te zijn in de Verenigde Staten. Austin is de afgelopen jaren erg belangrijk geweest en zal dat ook blijven. We zijn in onderhandeling over een verlenging van het contract. En uiteraard kijken we ook naar Miami. Meer kan ik op dit moment niet zeggen, maar de belangstelling is bij beide partijen groot."

Tot slot had Domenicali bemoedigende woorden over voor Vietnam en het Formule 1-project in Hanoi. De Vietnamese Grand Prix had vorig jaar al voor het eerst plaats moeten vinden, maar de uitbraak van het coronavirus gooide roet in het eten. Inmiddels lijkt het project compleet op zijn gat te liggen. "Vietnam staat nu niet meer op de kalender, maar blijft wel een optie. Ze hebben veel geïnvesteerd en komt daardoor in aanmerking voor een evenement in de toekomst."

Onmiddellijk doen! Maar liefst in een min of meer democratisch land waar de Afrikaan met de pet ook kan en mag genieten van het hele gebeuren. Het boegbeeld (promotor) bestaat al (Lewis). Ik gooi Baku graag van de kalender. Saudi Arabië eveneens...
