Otmar Szafnauer: "Sebastian Vettel is hongerig om te presteren"

Sebastian Vettel heeft in zijn eerste weken in dienst bij Aston Martin F1 Team een gretige indruk achtergelaten op teambaas Otmar Szafnauer. De viervoudig wereldkampioen, overgekomen van Ferrari, is erop gebrand om te bewijzen dat de Scuderia hem te vroeg heeft afgeschreven. Bovenal wil de Duitser weer plezier beleven aan de Formule 1.

Vettel is het rijden echt niet verleerd, benadrukt Szafnauer tegenover Sky Sports F1. "Op zijn leeftijd van 33 jaar ben je echt niet opeens vergeten hoe je snel kunt zijn met zo'n auto. Sebastian is het absoluut nog niet kwijt en de werkethiek is ook nog aanwezig. Hij is ontzettend hongerig om te presteren, dat zie je aan alles. Hij zit overal bovenop."

"Hij wil alles weten wat een performance engineer ook weet, en misschien nog wel meer. De taak van een performance engineer is om elk klein detail van de performance van de auto te doorgronden. Sebastian wil die informatie dus ook, plus meer. Dat is een goede eigenschap, het is iets wat hij ingebracht heeft bij ons team. We zien dat hij heel hongerig is om weer plezier aan de Formule 1 te beleven. En voor hem betekent plezier competitief zijn."

Samen met Lance Stroll moet hij Aston Martin helpen in de jacht op de derde plek bij de constructeurs. Szafnauer: "Sebastian is zeer ervaren en absoluut nog geen vergane glorie. Lance is veel jonger en zit nog midden in zijn leercurve, maar hij is van nature erg snel. Ze vullen elkaar aan en die combinatie zal ons komend seizoen van pas komen."

"We hebben een geschiedenis van coureurs die nauw met elkaar samenwerken om alles uit het team en de auto te halen. Zelfs in de tijd dat Esteban Ocon en Sergio Perez elkaar op de baan wel eens in de haren vlogen, deelden zij achter de schermen alle data om ervoor te zorgen dat het team gedurende een weekend het optimale uit de wagen wist te halen. Ik voorzie dat we die lijn doortrekken met Sebastian en Lance, daar verheug ik me op."

Ik geloof er niks van dat Seb afgelopen seizoen dezelfde behandeling heeft gekregen binnen Ferrari als Leclerc, want in 2019 wist hij Leclerc toch nog zeer regelmatig te verslaan waar het gat het afgelopen seizoen ineens enorm was.

Lance zal Seb idd naar grote hoogte kunnen brengen en vice versa.
Daarna wel ff de handjes wassen, broek omhoog, een snelle kus en weer ieder zijn weegs.

Voor wat betreft het raceweekend brengt het niks.
Lance zijn probleem is niet eens zozeer zijn snelheid hoewel deze niet fabelachtig is.
Zijn probleem is situational awareness. Oftewel, weten en zien wat er om hem heen gebeurt.
Dat gebrek aan awareness maakt dat Lance toch vaak bij crashes en incidenten betrokken is en niet sterk genoeg in de 1 op 1 gevechten. Dat leer je niet van Vettels data.
Seb daarentegen kan niet goed met druk om gaan al zal die druk bij een subtopper toch wel minder zijn. De resultaten daarmee echter ook. Aan de data van Lance heeft hij niks. Ze hadden Perez moeten houden. Nu is het een samenwerking geworden die niet zo heel veel zal brengen. In iedergeval niet meer dan wanneer Sergio was gebleven en een keer de volledige backing had gekregen ipv alle ballen op Lance.

  De druk bij een subtopper kan op zich wel minder zijn, in de zin dat er geen podiums verwacht worden, maar wat als Vettel niet sneller is dan Stroll? De druk neemt dan niet alleen toe, het gezeur ook en de vicieuze cirkel naar beneden, ingezet sinds 2017, gaat weer door.

Als Seb nu hongerig is, dan istie de laatste jaren flink volgevreten geweest, als je zijn prestaties gezien hebt.
Charlie heeft hem niet vernederd, hij heeft Seb opgevreten en uitgespuugd.

  Ja met de hulp van Ferrari ja... En dat lot staat Sainz vrees ik ook te wachten. Tot ze dr achter komen dat Leclerc het ook niet gaat zijn/doen/brengen, en dan wordt ook die weer afgeserveerd...

  We weten niet alles wat er bij Ferrari gespeeld heeft, niet met Vettel, ook niet wat er aan de hand was met dat blok, niet de uitkomst van het onderzoek over het al dan niet illegale motor.
  Iedereen houdt zijn lippen stijf op elkaar, en das mss maar goed ook.

  Turkije dit jaar vond ik wel heel opmerkelijk, onder de natte omstandigheden was Vettel heel duidelijk de bovenliggende partij ten opzichte van Leclerc. Naarmate de baan opdroogde kwam Leclerc weer bovendrijven.

  Seb was goed in zijn periode bij Red Bull. Talent, auto en wederzijdse toewijding was toen perfect voor hem. Daarna ging het fout en is het nooit meer goed gekomen, met afgelopen jaar als dieptepunt.
  Ik denk dat Seb nog wel hongerig is, maar hij gaat die honger niet meer stillen.

  @Niels: onzin, Leclerc heeft dat in zn eerste seizoen bij de Scuderia naar zich toegetrokken toen Vettel in de eerste helft van dat seizoen nog onbetwiste nr1 status had en Vettel de voordelen qua strategie kreeg. Dat alles was niet genoeg hulp. Vettel heeft meer hulp gekregen dan Leclerc.
  Dat Leclerc daarna gelijkwaardig werd behandeld is niks geks aan en volledig terecht.
  Zoals altijd kijkt men bij Ferrari gewoon wie de snelste blijkt en dat wordt de eerste man uiteindelijk.
  Zoals eigenlijk overal.
  Dus als Sainz sneller is dan moet ie dat laten zien, zoals Leclerc dat bij Vettel ook deed.
