'Portugal legt beslag op laatste plekje op F1-kalender voor 2021'

De Formule 1 keert komend seizoen definitief terug naar Portugal, zo schrijft Autosport.com. De teams zullen morgen tijdens de Formule 1 Commissie-vergadering op de hoogte gebracht worden van deze beslissing. De Portugese Grand Prix vult de enige resterende lege plek op de kalender voor 2021 op. Het circuit van Portimao zal op 2 mei weer een Formule 1-race huisvesten.

Het Autódromo Internacional do Algarve was vorig jaar voor het eerst gastheer voor een wedstrijd in de koningsklasse van de autosport. De baan met de vele hoogteverschillen en snelle bochten kon gelijk op goedkeuring onder de rijders rekenen, ook al waren de omstandigheden door de lage temperaturen verraderlijk en glad. Vooral de eerste paar ronden was de Grand Prix van Portugal van 2020 een ware tombola.

Na het uitstel van de Australische Grand Prix van 21 maart naar 21 november en het plaatsen van de Chinese Grand Prix op de reservelijst, was de Formule 1 op zoek naar alternatieve locaties. Met Imola was zo een overeenkomst gesloten over een race op 18 april, met Portimao duurde het wat langer. Dit was ook mede ingegeven door de onzekere situatie met betrekking tot het coronavirus in Portugal.

De knoop is nu echter doorgehakt, de Formule 1 reist voor het weekend van 2 mei weer af naar de Algarve. Daarmee is het scenario van twee races in Bahrein ook van de baan. Het seizoen zal nu op 28 maart starten in het oliestaatje en vervolgens zal Portimao na Imola de derde race van de jaargang 2021 voor zijn rekening nemen.

Met de corona-ellende in Portugal (alle IC bedden vol en uitwijken naar andere landen) had ik dit niet verwacht. Maar ik ben er wel blij mee. Het is een mooi circuit.
