Nico Hülkenberg wil de Formule 1-dampkring niet verlaten

Nico Hülkenberg heeft nog net niet bevestigd dat hij komend seizoen als test- en reserverijder bij het team van Aston Martin zal fungeren. Teambaas Otmar Szafnauer bekende eerder al dat hij gesprekken voerde met de Duitser die vorig jaar al een paar keer mocht invallen bij Racing Point, voorloper van Aston Martin, omdat Sergio Perez en Lance Stroll besmet raakten met corona.

Het plan van Aston Martin is nu om Hülkenberg officieel achter de hand te houden voor het geval dat er iets met de reguliere rijders Sebastian Vettel en Stroll gebeurt. De 33-jarige Duitser lijkt daar ook wel wat voor te voelen. Op de vraag van het blad GQ of hij in 2021 zijn comeback naast Vettel maakt, antwoordde Hülkenberg: "Nou, Sebastian heeft al een teamgenoot, dus ik zal zeker niet gelijk in de auto stappen."

"Desalniettemin kan ik niet ontkennen dat ik graag in de Formule 1-dampkring blijf in een poging om voor 2022 een permanent stoeltje in de wacht te slepen", vervolgt de voormalig Force India-, Williams-, Sauber- en Renault-coureur. "Wie weet wat er dit jaar al allemaal mogelijk zal zijn. Ik laat het allemaal op me afkomen en mocht zich een mogelijkheid aandienen, dan moet ik het net zo doen als ik het in 2020 gedaan heb."

Er zijn verder geen aanbiedingen bij Hülkenberg binnengekomen. "Dat klopt. Er zijn wel wat gesprekken geweest, zonder concreet resultaat. Ik hoef ook niet ten koste van alles terug te keren. Ik heb tien mooie jaren in de Formule 1 doorgebracht en ik ben niet het type persoon dat altijd maar wil blijven racen, zeker niet als veldvulling bij een team in de achterhoede. De pauze die ik daardoor heb genomen kwam voor mij persoonlijk als geroepen."

Hulkenberg is een prima reserve corona-rijder maar laten we eerlijk zijn, hij heeft 10 jaar lang zijn 'kans' gehad om te laten zien dat hij bijzonder is maar helaas is dat niet gebleken.
Verder een snelle en solide coureur maar zo heb je meerdere.

  Het is toch wel een bijzondere gast die Hulk. Voordat hij in de F1 kwam won hij zo'n beetje alles wat maar los en vast zat, en in de F1 niet 1 podiumfinish in 105 races. Das f.cking knap!

  Hij won sensationeel alle op zijn weg inderdaad. Maar ja, dat is geen garantie voor F1.
  Hij had wel een paar keer zijn podium-kansen zelf verpest door eigen fouten(niet door pech). Ik weet niet of dat gezien moet worden als een soort indicator misschien dat hij niet onder (hoge) druk kan presteren. Het kan ook zo zijn dat F1-wagens niet helemaal bij hem pasten waardoor zijn volledige full-potential niet optimaal benut werd.

  In zijn tijd bij FI samen met Perez versloeg hij deze voer het gehele seizoen bekeken. Mocht Perez het nu erg goed gaan doen bij RB, dan kan je de prestaties van de Hulk gerust in een ander perspectief gaan zetten.

  Hij heeft altijd moeten rijden in middenveld, achterhoede teams.
  
  Een beetje het Jos Verstappen verhaal.
  
  Bakken talent, weinig financiele backing, en op talent het lang volhouden in het middenveld.
  
  Dat hele podium gedoe is ook niet eerlijk. De man is constant en soms zelfs brilliant. Zie zijn Pole en vele opvallende races.
  
  De man zou een beter zitje verdienen. Maar F1 is soms niet eerlijk...

De F1 Dampkring nog niet verlaten? De dampkring is weel heel drastisch, Nico. Dan zoek je het opeens wel heel erg hoog. Stijg gewoon stapje voor stapje. Begin eerst maar eens om op een podium te klimmen ;-)

Reserve coureur bij Aston Martin is geen slechte keuze gezien de geruchten van Vettel als vervanger voor Hamilton in 2022. Al denk ik niet dat Mercedes gebaat is bij Vettel als vervanger....

Wanneer Hulkenberg in 2022 geen zitje kan verzekeren wordt het toch tijd om de F1 droom op te geven. WEC en DTM lijken mij prima opties voor hem. Zie hem niet snel in de Indycar stappen.

  Ik geloof niet dat Vettel kandidaat is om Hamilton te vervangen als die zijn helm aan de wilgen hangt (een bejaarde voor een bejaarde ruilen schiet immers niks op), die gaan voor Russel of Max. Of misschien wel voor allebei. Al hoop ik dat Max lekker bij RBR blijft, en daar zijn eerste titel gaat pakken.
