Alfa Romeo focust zich al op 2022: "Revolutionair andere auto"

Het team van Alfa Romeo presenteerde gisteren de bolide voor het seizoen 2021, maar stiekem zijn ze met hun hoofd al bij 2022. De ingrijpende reglementswijzigingen die volgend jaar hun intrede doen bieden kansen. Dat wil overigens niet zeggen dat Alfa Romeo helemaal niets aan de ontwikkeling van de C41 gaat doen.

Technisch directeur Jan Monchaux is echter duidelijk over waar de meeste aandacht op komt te liggen. "We focussen ons al op 2022. Dat wordt een revolutionair andere auto, echt een compleet andere bolide. Dit vertegenwoordigt een mooie kans om een sprong voorwaarts te maken in de pikorde en om dichter bij de voorhoede te komen. Het is geen geheim dat de voorkeur wat betreft ontwikkeling uitgaat naar 2022. Hoe minder energie en middelen we in 2021 steken, des te meer houden we over voor 2022, zeker nu een budgetlimiet van kracht is."

Monchaux verwacht echter nog niet dat het budgetplafond dit jaar al effect zal hebben op de sportieve verhoudingen tussen de teams. "Nee, dat zal in 2021 nog niet zichtbaar worden. Het budgetlimiet is dit jaar pas geïntroduceerd, toen waren de auto's voor komend seizoen al af of nagenoeg af. De teams ontwikkelen zich natuurlijk gedurende het jaar, maar door de stabiliteit in de reglementen voorzie ik geen radicaal andere pikorde. We zullen de impact van het budgetlimiet pas in 2022 merken, dan hebben alle teams met hetzelfde uitgangspunt hun wagens ontwikkeld."

"Dat gaat tot gevolg hebben dat de verschillen tussen de teams kleiner worden, al kan 2022 door de nieuwe reglementen een vertekend beeld geven. De grote teams hebben niet alleen meer geld en beter personeel, maar ook een technologisch voordeel waar ze de vruchten van plukken. Het duurt jaren voordat het budgetplafond dat heeft weggewerkt. Bovendien valt de aandrijflijn niet onder het budgetlimiet en dat blijft een belangrijk aspect voor de performance. Al met al denk ik dat de onderlinge verschillen over twee tot drie jaar gereduceerd zullen zijn."

  Als dat zo is (hekkensluiter dit jaar) dan zal Alfa, in navolging van Ferrari en Aston Martin, binnenkort ook met een mededeling komen dat ze een sponsordeal hebben gesloten met een "passend" horlogemerk: Omega ;-)
