Max Verstappen niet bezig met opvolging van Lewis Hamilton

Red Bull Racing-coureur Max Verstappen bekommert zich geen moment om de vraag of Mercedes hem op de korrel heeft als eventuele opvolger voor Lewis Hamilton. De Nederlander concentreert zich op het hier en nu. Met een mogelijke overstap naar Mercedes is hij totaal niet bezig.

"Ik doe daar niet aan mee", reageerde Verstappen op de geruchten dat Mercedes hem hoog op een verlanglijstje heeft staan. "Ik heb sowieso geen idee wat Lewis gaat doen. Ik focus me op dit jaar en ben nog helemaal niet bezig met een overstap of zo. Dat zit nu nog niet in mijn hoofd."

Zijn teambaas Christian Horner had eerder aangegeven dat hij zich heel goed kan voorstellen dat Mercedes bij Verstappen aanklopt als Hamilton na dit jaar besluit te stoppen. Het contract van Hamilton bij Mercedes is met slechts één jaar verlengd en loopt na 2021 af.

Horner zei over die situatie bij de concurrent: "Ik weet zeker dat Max bovenaan het lijstje van Mercedes staat voor het geval dat ze Hamilton kwijtraken. Maar ze hebben natuurlijk ook George Russell nog, dus ze hebben meerdere opties om voor te gaan in zo'n scenario."

      Ik hoop dat je gelijk hebt, want ik heb net een mooie Merc-trui gehaald. Uiteraard wel een BLM-editie met #44 erop, maar ik zou toch niet willen dat men zou kunnen denken dat ik Maxje support.

      Overigens denk ik serieus wel dat Verstappen in 2021 in de Mercedes zit.

      Of misschien gaat Mercedes wel voor Lance en laten ze die tweede coureur zitten. Met één auto winnen ze het WCC dan ook wel!
