Carlos Sainz zwijgt over crash tijdens bandentest op Jerez

Carlos Sainz was vorige week samen met zijn werkgever Ferrari en teamgenoot Charles Leclerc in het zuiden van Spanje voor een bandentest. Namens Pirelli trapte de Scuderia het testprogramma met de 18 inch-banden voor 2022 af. En er gaan nu verhalen dat dit voor Sainz niet geheel vlekkeloos is verlopen.

Volgens de geruchten is de Spanjaard tijdens die test namelijk gecrasht met de SF90 uit 2019. Sainz deelde de auto op dinsdag met Leclerc en toen kwamen ze samen uit op 85 rondjes. Op woensdag nam Sainz de hele dag voor zijn rekening en reed hij in totaal 125 ronden. De van McLaren overgekomen coureur laat weinig los over een eventueel ongeluk.

Sainz deelde aan Racefans.net mede: "Testen voor Pirelli is een delicate privékwestie, waardoor het lastig is voor mij om antwoord te geven op vragen die ergens anders vandaan komen. Ik weet niet wat contractueel toegestaan is om wel en niet los te laten over de test. Maar als er iets gebeurd is, wat ik niet ga vertellen, dan was het minimaal."

Zijn eerste indruk van de nieuwe banden was in ieder geval positief. "Als je bedenkt dat Pirelli nog maar net in de beginfase van het programma zit, dan zijn de eerste signalen inderdaad veelbelovend", aldus Sainz. "Je voelt wel gelijk het verschil. Natuurlijk zijn er punten waar nog aan gewerkt moet worden, maar over het algemeen was het gevoel positief. Het is afwachten hoe dat volgend jaar zal zijn, want dan zijn de auto's compleet anders dan waar we nu mee getest hebben."

  Inderdaad, de bandenstapels worden ook voorzien van 18 inch banden en die moeten uiteraard zorgvuldig getest worden.
