Wolff over budget cap: "Dit heeft Mercedes alleen maar beter gemaakt"

Voor het 2021-seizoen is er een limiet geplaatst hoeveel geld de teams mogen uitgeven gedurende het seizoen. Deze zogeheten budget cap zou zijn ingevoerd om ervoor te zorgen dat de grote teams niet ongelimiteerd geld kunnen spenderen om hun voordeel verder te exploiteren; met als uiteindelijke doel om het veld dichterbij elkaar te brengen.

Het limiet is gesteld op $145 miljoen voor het Formule 1-seizoen - dit is significant minder dan de top 3 teams voorheen per seizoen zouden spenderen. Naar gerucht zouden Mercedes en Ferrari seizoenen hebben gekend waar zij meer dan $500 miljoen hebben geïnvesteerd.

Je zou dus denken dat een gigant als Mercedes er op achteruit gaat. Volgens teambaas en mede-grootaandeelhouder Toto Wolff is dit, echter, niet het geval. Hij staat er op dat dit zijn team alleen maar beter heeft gemaakt. "Je moet hoe je opereert als team compleet trimmen", zo vertelt Toto Wolff. "Wij zijn van mening dat dit een prestatie-voordeel oplevert omdat je compleet moet herzien wat we doen en vooral hoe we dat doen."

"Er is meer nadruk en focus op de gebieden waarvan wij van mening zijn waar we onze beste prestaties vandaan halen", zo vertelt Wolff verder. "Voor ons is prioriteiten stellen erg belangrijk geweest - in plaats van focussen op twee dingen tegelijk doen wij dat altijd voor maar één, omdat dat zoveel meer nadruk biedt op wat wij vinden dat betere prestaties oplevert."

"Echter, de budget cap heeft dit tot een nieuw niveau doen tillen, aangezien wij in het verleden niet opereerden met een kostenrestrictie. We moeten nu precies binnen de lijntjes kleuren wat betreft onze uitgaven. Dit betekent dat je als team geforceerd wordt om je interne processen beter te begrijpen; elk klein dingetje moet worden geëvalueerd wat betreft kosten."

Mercedes is ook in 2021 weer de duidelijke favoriet, en Lewis Hamilton zal een poging doen om zijn record-brekende achtste wereldtitel te bemachtigen. Er wordt verwacht dat Red Bull racing het enige team is dat de grootmacht Mercedes kan doen stoppen, met een nieuwe line-up in Max Verstappen en Sergio Perez. Over vijf dagen zullen de eerste tests beginnen in Bahrein, waar meer duidelijkheid kan worden gecreëerd wat betreft de relatieve pikorde van het Formule 1-veld van 2021.

Als je je bedrijfsstructuur en dan vooral je bedrijfscultuur al heel gord op orde hebt en dat heeft Mercedes zeker, dan mag dat natuurlijk geen enkel probleem zijn.

  Denk ook dat de R&D beperkingen meer hinder geven dan het budgetlimiet. Vooral in ontwikkeling van het 2de jaar met deze regel als het verschil in de beperkingen groter wordt. Dingen als het DAS systeem of andere moeilijke innovaties kost immers gewoon ontwikkelingstijd.

Die Wolff, alle maatregelen vallen volgens hem in het voordeel van Mercedes uit. Zo zou het verbieden van de party mode volgens Wolf ook Mercedes alleen maar sterker maken, Yeah right. Wat is het volgende? Het slopen van DAS heeft de Mercedessen sterker gemaakt?

Het is duidelijk dat dit een geoliede machine is die zich geen enkele uitdaging ontziet en razendsnel aanpast aan een nieuw opgelegd keurslijf.

Los van F1 kunnen vele bedrijven daar een voorbeeld aannemen. Op een positieve manier iets nieuws benaderen is vandaag niet zo evident als mag worden verondersteld.
