Russell: "Wacht nou eerst 2022 af voordat je sprintraces introduceert"

Williams-coureur George Russell begrijpt niet waarom de Formule 1-leiding plotseling zo'n haast heeft om het concept van sprintraces tijdens een Grand Prix-weekend uit te proberen. De koningsklasse van de autosport voert na dit jaar ingrijpende reglementswijzigingen door en mogelijk gaat het racen er daardoor enorm op vooruit. Dan zijn die sprintraces helemaal niet nodig.

De Formule 1 wil dit jaar drie keer experimenteren met een sprintrace op de zaterdag, een zogenaamde 'superkwalificatie'. Russell is niet per definitie tegen, maar hij snapt de timing gewoon niet. "Het racen in de Formule 1 moet verbeterd worden en ik denk dat dit zal gebeuren door de nieuwe technische reglementen die in 2022 hun opwachting maken. Die regels zullen ons coureurs in staat stellen om meer met elkaar te knokken. We moeten geduldig blijven."

"Laten we nou eerst volgend jaar afwachten voordat we sprintraces gaan invoeren. Het idee om het Grand Prix-format een beetje overhoop te gooien kan geen kwaad, misschien is het wel heel interessant. Ik beschik niet over de details wat ze precies willen doen, dus het is lastig om daar al iets over te zeggen. Wie weet biedt het ons bij Williams meer mogelijkheden, maar toch denk ik dat we eerst 2022 moeten aankijken om te zien of het wel echt noodzakelijk is."

Teamgenoot Nicholas Latifi staat ook open voor sprintraces, zij het onder voorwaarden. "Het Grand Prix-format is al geruime tijd hetzelfde. Ik genoot er wel van hoe het vorig jaar op Imola was, met een tweedaags raceweekend. Het was net even anders, verfrissend. De vrije trainingen zijn voor dit seizoen al ingekort, dat is al een verandering. De Formule 1 moet er niet voor terugdeinzen om meer te veranderen. Verandering is in mijn ogen alleen maar goed."

"Echter, het moet niet te kunstmatig overkomen, als een of andere gimmick. De Formule 1 moet trouw blijven aan wat het is, dat is het belangrijkste. De beste technologie, de beste auto's en de beste coureurs moeten uiteindelijk wel blijven winnen. Zolang dat hetzelfde blijft en ze veranderen het een en ander aan het format, dan ben ik voor. Wellicht creëert het mogelijkheden voor ons die in onze positie zeer welkom zijn."

Hij bedoelt ook niet dat je moet wachten tot volgend jaar om het in te voeren, hij zegt dat je eerst 2022 moet afwachten om te kijken of het wel nodig is.

Ik lees hier ook wel een beetje dat hij liever sprintraces doet in een Mercedes dan in een Williams. Met het oog op 2022.

Ja, lekker gaan zitten wachten op iets waarvan je niet weet of het iets is. Tuurlijk moet je niet nog een jaar gaan wachten en je moet het helemaalniet introduceren in een jaar met nieuwe reglementen. Dit seizoen is ideaal om ermee te testen, iedereen kent de auto's door en door en er wordt nog amper aan ontwikkeld. Dat is het ideale moment om eens iets te proberen wat niks met de auto's te maken heeft.

Daar heeft hij helemaal gelijk in, als de regels voor 2022 zo werken als zou moeten zou het veld sowieso dichterbij elkaar moeten zitten en zou inhalen makkelijker moeten zijn, dus sprintraces zijn echt een voorbarige beslissing

Bijna iedereen is er over eens dat het merendeel van die ruk races de we voorgeschoteld krijgen is omdat het veld niet competatief is. Denk men nu echt dat een heel weekend opofferen voor een uitslag die nagenoeg al vast staat meer kijkers gaat trekken?
