Bij debutanten houden teams altijd rekening met wat extra schuivers en crashes. Wat dat betreft heeft Haas F1 Team heel wat om naar uit te kijken voor komend seizoen, met een line-up bestaande uit twee rookies. Tijdens de wintertest in Bahrein hielden Nikita Mazepin en Mick Schumacher zich echter keurig staande. Ze reden in ieder geval geen schade.

Mazepin kroop wel twee keer door het oog van de naald tijdens de drie testdagen in Bahrein, zo gaf de Rus na afloop van de testweek toe. Zo was er de opmerkelijke boordradio waarbij hij riep: "Hahaha, ik crashte bijna op Lewis Hamilton." Hamilton was op de derde van drie testdagen net zelf gespind bij het opkomen van het rechte stuk en bij zijn uitwijkende manoeuvre verloor Mazepin bijna de controle over zijn auto.

De Haas F1 Team-coureur verklaarde zijn reactie op dat moment zelf via zijn social media-kanalen. "Wow, ik had een angstig moment met Lewis tijdens mijn racesimulatie. De banden waren aan het eind van hun Latijn en ik ben blij dat we elkaar niet geraakt hebben. Mijn reactie was hoe het klinkt om opgelucht te zijn om niet te crashen."

Een dag eerder botste hij bijna op Antonio Giovinazzi. Mazepin spinde, maar het was een bewuste actie, verklaarde de Rus. "Het is bekend dat je in de Formule 1 veel downforce verliest als je vlak achter een andere deelnemer rijdt. Dat wilde ik wel even ervaren en dat is gelukt, al ging het bijna gepaard met een crash vanwege een rukwind. Dat was ook wel een zorgwekkend moment, maar wel goed om even aan den lijve te ondervinden."

  Ik ken genoeg mensen die beginnen te gniffelen en te giechelen op het moment dat ze onder druk staan/stress ervaren.

  Sowieso een vreemd tijdverdrijf; spijkers lopen zoeken in water. Misschien kun je dan beter naar de waddeneilanden gaan, daar kun je wellicht nog een containertje scoren ;-)

Is er wel schade gereden door een rijder, ik kan het me niet voor me halen. Dat ze echt ergens tegen aan reden, volgens mij niemand.

  Ieder jaar is er met testen wel iemand die hem plat rijdt. Dit jaar zijn ze dus behoedzaam geweest met oog op de minimale testfase

Hij wilde ervaren hoe het was als de downforce wegvalt na het kort rijden op iemand. Heel slim omdat tijdens de testwagen te doen waarbij het team andere dingen moet testen.
