Verloren downforce al voor de helft teruggewonnen door F1-teams

De Formule 1-teams hebben reeds een groot deel van de verloren neerwaartse druk teruggewonnen. Dat concludeert Mario Isola van bandenleverancier Pirelli, voor wie de reglementen voor 2021 zijn aangepast om de krachten op de banden niet te hoog op te laten lopen. Mede op aandringen van de Italiaanse bandenfirma is onder meer een hap uit de vloer van de wagens voor de achterwielen gehaald om de downforce terug te dringen.

Die opzet is slechts deels geslaagd. De Formule 1 zou de Formule 1 niet zijn als de teams de kwijtgeraakte neerwaartse druk op andere manieren proberen te compenseren. En dat lukt ze al aardig, bleek tijdens de wintertest in Bahrein. Isola vertelde aan Auto Motor und Sport: "Het oorspronkelijke plan was een downforce-reductie van 10 procent. In feite liggen de downforce-waarden nu 4 of 5 procent lager dan vorig jaar. De teams weten dus al een behoorlijk deel van de verloren neerwaartse druk elders vandaan te halen."

Zonder de reglementaire ingrepen zouden de auto's nog veel sneller gaan dan ze al gaan en meer downforce genereren. "Dat toont aan dat we de juiste beslissing hebben genomen om de banden voor dit jaar robuuster te maken zodat we ook in de tweede seizoenshelft nog de veiligheid kunnen waarborgen", aldus Isola.

De nieuwe banden werkten zo goed samen met de nieuwe auto's dat Pirelli de teams toestemming gaf om de bandendruk te verlagen met 1,5 PSI. Isola: "Dit verbeterde de balans van de wagens. De neiging tot onderstuur verdween en het risico op oververhitting van het rubber verdween. We hebben nauwelijks problemen ervaren in Bahrein. Graining was helemaal niet aan de orde en we zagen ook vrijwel geen blaren op de banden."

  Max had niets te bewijzen, en heeft een hekel aan die training dagen.
  Perez wilde juist iets laten zien, en veel leren... daar zit een groot verschil in.
  
  we zullen het zien tijdens de kwalificatie en de races, ik schat Ric hoger in dan Perez, en die had Max al aardig in "the pocket".

  Max gaat Checo op zo'n brute manier aan banden leggen, dat het slechts een kwestie van tijd is voordat hij een hap uit z'n vloer zal nemen.

Ik zou hiervan maken te verlagen MET 1.5 PSI of mis ik iets met bandendrukken in de formule 1?

Bij zo'n artikels moet ik altijd denken aan de fan-car. Dat vond ik indertijd een sterk stukje innovatie.
