Williams koestert onafhankelijke status: "Willen geen B-team zijn"

Het team van Williams voelt er weinig voor om als B-team voor een van de fabrieksteams of topteams te gaan fungeren. De Britse renstal zou op die manier hun toekomst veilig kunnen stellen en hun competitiviteit op de korte termijn kunnen verbeteren, naar voorbeeld van Aston Martin met Mercedes of Alfa Romeo en Haas F1 met Ferrari.

Williams past daarvoor. Directeur Jost Capito: "Onze doelstelling is om onafhankelijk te blijven en niet gekocht te worden door een ander team of een fabrikant. Williams is altijd onafhankelijk geweest. In onze ogen heeft een B-team weinig tot niets in te brengen. Wij willen dan ook geen B-team zijn, wij willen een A-team zijn. Racen vormt de kern van ons bestaan. Dat moet zo blijven en we willen niet overgeleverd zijn aan de grillen van bijvoorbeeld een autofabrikant."

De Britse renstal is sinds de zomer van vorig jaar in handen van investeringsmaatschappij Dorilton Capital. Capito vindt dat er sindsdien goede stappen zijn gezet. "Aan de infrastructuur is veel gedaan sinds Dorilton de scepter zwaait. Daar is veel in geïnvesteerd. We beschikken bijvoorbeeld over fantastische nieuwe machines in de fabriek, zoals voor 3D-printing. De hardware, software en IT-structuur zijn onder handen genomen."

"Er is echt veel gedaan. We hebben een geweldige windtunnel. We hebben niet alles, maar wel een hoop om een betere positie op de grid te bemachtigen. Het is alleen geen kwestie van een schakelaar omzetten en je bent er, je moet alles goed implementeren en kalibreren voordat je er de vruchten van plukt. Daarom was het zo belangrijk dat we er eind vorig jaar al mee begonnen zijn, dan staat alles goed afgesteld om in 2022 grote stappen te zetten."

Misschien even vergeten of de kennis gewoonweg niet in huis hebben waarom die zogenaamde kluns daar zit?

    Ik neem aan dat ze bedoelen dat ze geen ontwikkel/test team van een ander team willen zijn, zoals AT/STR was en Alfa/Ferrari, want B-team zijn ze helaas wel al een tijdje. Als het geen C-team is. Het wordt tijd dat ook Williams eens wat van zijn oudere glorie terug krijgt.

      Dat is dus al mislukt gezien de overname van die invest maatschappij.. misschien heeft Capito dat even gemist?
      Ik dacht dat het ging om niet willen kopen van onderdelen van bijv. Mercedes, maar alles zelf maken..
      en ook in dat geval slaan ze de plank mis lijkt me. Zie Racing Point / AM

      @Roger Je weet hoe dat werkt met aandeelhouders hopelijk ? Die willen winst of ze verpatsen de boel. Williams als team heeft niet veel te vertellen.
      Ik hoop dat ze hun punten nog kunnen scoren. Laatste podium van Williams was volgens mij Canada 2016 van Bottas.
      Maar als team zijn ze te koppig.

      De investeringsmaatschappij is de eigenaar; Williams opereert dus volledig zelfstandig. De aandeelhouders hebben overigens een Raad van Bestuur benoemd die belast is met het dagelijks bestuur van de onderneming. Dat een eigenaar de zaak in eigendom kan overdragen is inherent aan het eigendomsrecht.

    Misschien ben ik één van de weinigen, maar ik voorzie wel een verrassing dit seizoen met Williams. Daarmee bedoel ik dat ik Russel zomaar meermaals punten zie pakken dit jaar. Ik verwacht stappen vooruit van Williams, waar ik dat niet zie van Haas. Met wellicht wat struggelingen bij de sub-toppers als Aston Martin en Alpine en een zoveelste crash van Giovinazzi zou Russel zomaar een paar top 10 finishes kunnen behalen! En wanneer Latifi gewoon weer laatste blijft worden zoals altijd, dan gaan wellicht ook de ogen open daar dat ze die kluns nu eindelijk eens gaan vervangen om weer serieus genomen te worden!

      @Rogier, Williams gaat verbeteren maar dat heeft tijd nodig. Ik zie Russel dit jaar ook wel punten pakken maar de echte stap ga je in 2022 zien. Geld is het probleem niet meer bij Williams, tijd en de juiste mensen zijn de uitdaging voor het team uit Grove. Wat betreft Latifi komt dit nog voort uit de overname, aangezien Williams dit jaar met dezelfde auto aan het rijden is en je dus geen wonderen hoeft te verwachten. Daarnaast is het afkopen van het contract van Latifi inclusief het kwijt raken van sponsors zoals Sofina en Lavazza, dat het voor nu gewoon een betere optie is om Latifi en Nissany voor dit jaar nog bij het team te houden.

      Ik zie Latifi en Nissany volgend jaar niet terugkeren bij Williams. Russel zal helaas vertrekken naar Mercedes. Ik zie het zo gebeuren dat Bottas zal terugkeren naar Williams met een jong talent naast hem in de Williams voor volgend jaar.

      @core2duo: mee eens, Latifi zit daar vanwege vet geld dat hij mee brengt al evt dat voordeel weg als er punten te scoren zijn, wat Russel wél en Latifi niet gaat doen. Bottas terug zie ik niet gebeuren. Nu de Williams-familie weg is bij het team is het draagvlak voor Bottas dat ook. Ik gok op een talent (met enig budget) en bijvoorbeeld een Norris ofzo. Om één of andere reden verwacht ik niet dat Norris nog lang bij McLaren kan blijven. Hij is snel, maar geen absolute topper naar mijn mening en ik zie niet zo snel in waar hij dan terecht kan. Of anders een Albon van RBR-reserve naar Williams coureur.

      @Rogier, dat is wel een interessante Norris als een optie. Ik vraag mij dan alleen af welke optie voor McL beter is indien je Norris gaat vervangen? Albon is idd een optie maar dan zie ik Gasly als een beter alternatief. Ik kan mij namelijk voorstellen dat hij er na dit jaar wel klaar mee is bij AT indien hij geen doorgang kan vinden naar Red Bull dat hij op zoek gaat naar een ander team.
