Yuki Tsunoda: "Trucje met DRS tijdens test leverde twee tienden op"

Scuderia AlphaTauri-coureur Yuki Tsunoda heeft in de aanloop naar de Grand Prix van Bahrein toegegeven dat hij zijn snelste tijd op de slotdag van de enige wintertest voor een klein gedeelte te danken had aan een foefje met DRS. De jonge Japanner klapte zijn achtervleugel bij het opkomen van het rechte stuk van start en finish al open voordat hij zich in de DRS-zone bevond.

Niet dat Tsunoda daar nu zelf heel veel aan kon doen. De eerste twee dagen was dit namelijk niet mogelijk, maar op de derde dag kon het opeens wel. "Ik heb gemerkt dat er wat ophef over mijn snelste ronde tijdens de test is ontstaan. Ik activeerde DRS inderdaad eerder dan de andere rijders. Het was vreemd, want de eerste twee dagen kon je buiten de DRS-zones op de DRS-knop drukken en dan gebeurde er niks", aldus Tsunoda tegenover Auto Hebdo.

Om een of andere reden lukt het hem op de slotdag wel om buiten de DRS-zones de beweegbare achtervleugel te gebruiken. Tsunoda vervolgt: "Ik dacht dat de FIA misschien iets met het systeem aan het testen was, daar profiteerde ik van. Ik klapte mijn achtervleugel iets eerder open dan de rest. Ik schat dat het me zo'n twee tienden aan rondetijd heeft opgeleverd."

Dus ook zonder DRS te vroeg te openen was Tsunoda op die laatste dag hoog op het tijdenlijstje geëindigd. Tel twee tienden bij zijn 1:29.053 van de derde testdag in Bahrein op en hij bezet nog steeds de tweede plaats. "De test is voor ons hoe dan ook goed verlopen, al weten we ook dat we nog bepaalde dingen kunnen verbeteren voordat de eerste kwalificatie aanbreekt", besluit de AlphaTauri-coureur.

Red Bull-motorsportadviseur Helmut Marko koestert hoge verwachtingen van Tsunoda. "Hij wordt de beste Formule 1-coureur die Japan ooit heeft voortgebracht." De Oostenrijker denkt dat AlphaTauri zich vlak achter McLaren en Aston Martin zal nestelen, op gelijke hoogte met Ferrari en Alpine. "Ze laten in ieder geval Alfa Romeo, Haas F1 en Williams achter zich", voorspelt Marko in Kleine Zeitung.

Ja ja, het zal wel. Iedereen kan wel speculeren over de geboekte tijdswinst (dat doet Tsunoda hier ook), het feit blijft dat de tijden van Tsunoda zijn niet representatief zijn te noemen. Niet dat dat nodig is, want men is het er wel over eens dat het een snelle coureur is. Maw: lekker boeiend.
