Grand Prix van Bahrein stapt voor 2022 over op zonne-energie

De organisatie van de Grand Prix van Bahrein en de Formule 1 hebben in een gezamenlijk persbericht aangekondigd dat het raceweekend op Sakhir voor volgend jaar een grote stap zet richting een klimaatneutraal evenement. De Grand Prix draait vanaf 2022 volledig op zonne-energie, afkomstig uit een zonnepark dat deze zomer aangelegd wordt binnen de contreien van Bahrain International Circuit.

Deze ontwikkeling sluit aan op de ambitie van de Formule 1 om vanaf 2030 volledig CO2-neutraal te opereren. Met de overstap naar zonne-energie reduceert Bahrein de CO2-uitstoot aanzienlijk en bovendien besparen ze hierdoor op energiekosten. De Grand Prix op het circuit van Sakhir vindt deels in de avonduren plaats en de lichtinstallatie vreet energie, maar Bahrein denkt meer dan genoeg energie op te kunnen wekken met een zonnepark.

Formule 1-directeur Stefano Domenicali: "We zijn trots op de inspanningen van Bahrein om hun evenement duurzamer te maken en hun grotere plannen voor de toekomst. Het is opnieuw een voorbeeld van de stappen die een land kan nemen om aan de hand van technologie en innovatie de duurzaamheid te bevorderen. Dit komt perfect overeen met onze eigen ambities om vanaf 2030 CO2-neutraal te zijn en de duurzaamheid op en naast de baan te verbeteren."

Sjeik Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa, directeur van Bahrain International Circuit: "Deze aankondiging past in een groter geheel aan ambities om te verduurzamen en bij te dragen aan het doel van de Formule 1 om vanaf 2030 CO2-neutraal te functioneren. Dit initiatief maakt onze Formule 1-race niet alleen een schoner en groener evenement voor de toekomst, maar moedigt andere grote evenementen hopelijk aan om hetzelfde te doen en inspireert fans om verandering te omarmen."

Eigenlijk ongekend dat dit nog niet gebeurd... Dat Silverstone dit niet doet, oke... maar de zon staat hier 340 dagen per jaar te branden als een malle.

Het lastige van lampen die je aanzet als het donker wordt is dat de zon dan ook niet meer schijnt.

Maar goed, slechts een detail als je het mij vraagt.

  @Maximo: ik heb horen fluisteren dat als "part of the deal" alle stewards en medewerkers van de catering een Tesla krijgen. Die moeten ze dan 's ochtends braaf naast elkaar koppelen aan het PV systeem van het circuit en dan 's avonds worden hun accu's leeg getrokken voor de verlichting van de baan 😉
