Pierre Gasly: "Last van mijn schouders na ontboezeming over 2019"

Scuderia AlphaTauri-coureur Pierre Gasly heeft het gevoel dat er een last van zijn schouders is gevallen nadat hij in een uitgebreide column zijn frustraties over het teleurstellende seizoen 2019 van zich af heeft geschreven. De Fransman begon dat jaar in dienst van Red Bull Racing, maar door tegenvallende prestaties werd hij teruggezet naar opleidingsteam Scuderia Toro Rosso. Tot overmaat van ramp kwam Anthoine Hubert, met wie hij goed bevriend was, om het leven bij een crash in de Formule 2.

Gasly pakte de pen op om zijn waarheid over dat seizoen te vertellen in een column voor The Players Tribune. De Fransman voelde zich nauwelijks gesteund binnen Red Bull Racing. Gasly bloeide vorig jaar juist op bij Scuderia AlphaTauri. De Fransman was vastberaden het ongelijk van de Red Bull-top te bewijzen, behaalde goede resultaten, nam AlphaTauri bij de hand en wist verrassend zelfs te winnen op Monza. Maar het was niet genoeg, Red Bull Racing koos voor 2021 voor Sergio Perez.

In Bahrein deelde hij mede opgelucht te zijn dat zijn verhaal naar buiten is gekomen. Gasly: "Soms is het makkelijker om dingen op te schrijven dan om ze uit te spreken. Ik zat met bepaalde dingen die ik wilde delen en dat voelt gewoon goed, alsof er een last van mijn schouders gevallen is. Het is niet eenvoudig om dit soort zaken ter sprake te brengen. Bij alles wat je doet in het leven stuit je op uitdagingen. Dat geldt niet alleen voor mij, dat is op iedereen van toepassing."

"Het is belangrijk om die uitdagingen het hoofd te bieden. Dat vormt je als persoon, als coureur, als mens. De periode waar ik het over heb gehad heeft mij ook verder gevormd tot wie ik nu ben. Ik heb nooit opgegeven, ik heb altijd duidelijk voor ogen gehad wat ik wil bereiken in deze sport. Dat heeft me geholpen. Dus het is goed dat het naar buiten is gekomen, ik voel me er beter door. Ik ga verder niet in op details, hetgeen ik wilde delen heb ik in het verhaal opgenomen."

  Vorig jaar had Ocon al last van zijn schouders na val van het podium, nu heeft Gasly ineens last van zijn schouders. Misschien dat de FIA daar toch eens onderzoek naar moet doen.
