Nikita Mazepin over slechte reputatie: "Moeten de fans zelf beoordelen"

Nikita Mazepin zegt dat hij zichzelf zal blijven in de Formule 1 en niet zal veranderen. Zelfs voordat hij aan een enkele F1-race deelnam, is de Russische rookie het onderwerp geweest van een intense campagne op social media waarin Haas werd opgeroepen hem te ontslaan.

De 22-jarige, wiens miljardair-vader Dmitry's bedrijf Uralkali de hoofdsponsor van het Amerikaanse team is, bevond zich deze winter in het middelpunt van een vermeende controverse omdat hij een vrouw onzedelijk had betast. Maar zijn capriolen op het circuit in lagere categorieën waren de afgelopen jaren ook niet populair. Mazepin zegt echter dat hij zichzelf zal blijven.

Niet proberen anders te zijn

"Ik vind het niet leuk als mensen zich proberen voor te doen voor iemand die ze niet zijn", zei hij tegen het Russische sportdagblad Sport-Express. "Ik denk niet dat je zoals iemand anders hoeft te zijn. Ik ben een persoon, een racer die alles van mezelf gaat geven op de baan. Dat is het belangrijkste voor mij."

"Ik zal de fans zelf laten beslissen wat mijn reputatie is. Tegelijkertijd kan ik zeggen dat mijn races niet saai zijn om naar te kijken", zo sprak een vol zelfverzekerde Mazepin.

Ondanks de intrige zullen de capriolen van Mazepin dit seizoen waarschijnlijk helemaal achteraan op de grid plaatsvinden. Hij kwalificeerde zich achteraan op de twintigste plaats en spinde meerdere keren.

Komt niets van terecht, de vraag is alleen hoelang gaan ze hem bij Haas houden, geld is geen probleem bij de Fam.

Je mag best jezelf zijn, ben ik ook, maar niet ten koste van een ander.
Hij kan in de race ook iemand anders eruit rijden. Zal best wel gebeuren, nu en in de toekomst.
