Daniel Ricciardo meteen sneller dan Norris: "Goed begin van McLaren-avontuur"

Daniel Ricciardo maakte meteen indruk bij zijn eerste kwalificatie voor het team van McLaren. De Australiër die afgelopen winter de overstap maakte van Renault naar McLaren, was namelijk meteen sneller dan de toch hoog aangeschreven Lando Norris. McLaren leek er tijdens de wintertests al goed voor te staan, maar waar sommigen gehoopt hadden dat het roemruchte team uit Woking kon aansluiten bij Red Bull en Mercedes, moest Ricciardo met een Q3-tijd van 1:29.927 toch bijna een seconde toegeven op de pole tijd van Max Verstappen.

Desalniettemin was de voormalige Red Bull-coureur niet ontevreden: "Het was zeker een goede avond, hoe formeel dat ook klinkt. Ik was gisteren nog niet helemaal op snelheid en ik weet dat dat tijd kost en hoe meer rondes ik rijd, hoe beter ik de auto en de limiet ervan ga aanvoelen. Ik weet dat ik inmiddels een ervaren coureur ben, maar het gaat altijd tijd kosten om helemaal op snelheid te komen. Toch ben ik hier al heel blij mee en een goede start voor mijn McLaren avontuur."

Toen teambaas Zak Brown langs het vierkantje liep, werd Ricciardo ook nog even gevraagd hoe hij dacht dat de grote baas van McLaren zijn optreden had beoordeeld: "Nou hij gaf me net een 'thumbs up', dus ik denk dat hij tevreden is. Ik was de eerste twee dagen van het testen nog niet in topvorm, maar ik denk dat hij blij is met de vooruitgang in dit korte tijdsbestek."

  Niet zo goed als Leclerc en Russell, maar wel beter dan bijvoorbeeld Albon en met wat meer ervaring is hij ook beter dan Sainz. Dan ben je wel een subtopper.

  En Ricciardo moet je ook niet onderschatten, die maakte de afgelopen jaren gehakt van Vettel, Kvyat, Hulkenberg en Ocon en is tot zo ver de enige coureur die niet compleet zoekgereden werd door Verstappen, ook al was het verschil in 2018 aanzienlijk.

  Ik denk dat Norris wel dat talent is. Hij had een beetje pech met het moment dat Alonso de pit uitkwam anders had hij hem wel voor Ricciardo gezet. Ricciardo is echt wel een hele goede coureur. Maar vergeet ook Oostenrijk vorig jaar niet waar hij het podium afpakte van Hamilton door de snelste race ronde te rijden.

  Het is wel een toptalent. Maar als je verwent bent met Lewis/Vettel/Verstappen/Leclerc de afgelopen 15 jaar dan ga je al snel hogere eisen stellen.

  @Roy, dan is het dus geen toptalent, want dan is hij minder dan de namen die je opnoemt.
  
  Ik weet het persoonlijk nog niet. Denk wel dat hij een hele solide rijder is (hij zat maar 5 honderdsten van Ricciardo af, die toch een van de betere coureurs op de grid is naar mijn mening), maar ik schat hem minder in dan Russell, die ik in de gp2 al erg sterk vond.

  Als je zo redeneert zijn er op één of twee na alleen maar toptalenten in de F1, anders waren ze er in de F3 al wel afgevallen natuurlijk.
  
  Norris is een type Bottas. Degelijke coureur en zal best wel wat GP's kunnen winnen met de juiste wagen, maar komt net dat beetje te kort voor de absolute top. Was in de opstapklassen ook zo. Daarom is het net zo jammer dat Russell 3 jaar voor Williams moet rijden, die was net dat klapje sneller dan Norris en zal waarschijnlijk wél bij de toppers horen.

  Ze zijn nogal fan van Ricciardo inderdaad. Hij doet het waarschijnlijk wel goed voor de kijkcijfers, maar seizoen 1 was bijna een promotiefilm voor Ricciardo :D.
