Octane Racing Group, promotor van de Grand Prix van Canada, heeft zich de woede van Formule 1-fans op de hals gehaald. De organisatie blijft namelijk in gebreke bij de terugbetaling van tickets die voor de afgelaste editie van 2020 zijn gekocht, bericht The Globe and Mail. Fans wachten negen maanden nadat het evenement plaats had moeten vinden nog altijd op hun geld.

Toen duidelijk werd dat de Canadese Grand Prix vorig jaar niet door kon gaan, bood de Octane Racing Group de mensen met een kaartje twee opties: de tickets doorschuiven naar de volgende editie of annuleren en geld terug. De fans die voor die tweede optie hebben gekozen, moeten echter de grootst mogelijke moeite doen om contact te leggen met de organisatie en iets van hun geld terug te zien.

De situatie is dusdanig schrijnend dat sommige reisbureaus die als tussenpersoon hebben opgetreden klanten uit eigen zak hebben terugbetaald en dat geld nu proberen te verhalen op de Octane Racing Group. Nicola Denbigh, mede-eigenaar van Motor Sports Travel, laat weten dat alle promotors van de vorig jaar geannuleerde Grands Prix snel waren met het terugbetalen, behalve Canada.

Sommige fans begonnen een petitie of spanden een rechtszaak aan om hun geld terug te eisen, met succes. Maar een onbekend aantal fans wacht nog altijd op hun centen, zo schrijft The Globe and Mail. In een reactie gaat Octane Racing Group niet inhoudelijk op de zaak in, maar haalt het uit naar de sensatiebeluste berichtgeving waardoor directieleden nu bedreigd en lastiggevallen worden.

2021

Het perspectief voor dit jaar is eveneens somber. Het is allerminst zeker dat de Canadese Grand Prix nu wel door kan gaan. Het land hanteert strenge reisrestricties, waardoor het Amerikaanse IMSA-kampioenschap al besloten heeft om de voor 4 juli in het Canadese Mosport geplande race te verplaatsen naar de Verenigde Staten. De Grand Prix van Canada op het circuit van Montreal staat gepland voor 13 juni.
