Ook Williams laat de bolide voor 2021 grotendeels voor wat het is

In navolging van Haas F1 Team heeft ook Williams aangegeven dit jaar vooral als overgangsjaar te beschouwen. De blik van de Britse renstal is eveneens meer op 2022 gericht, alleen iets minder nadrukkelijk dan bij Haas F1. Dat team doet na Imola niks meer aan de ontwikkeling van de huidige auto. Williams is wel van plan om de FW43B nog iets verder door te ontwikkelen, maar het mag niet te veel moeite kosten.

Williams-directeur Jost Capito schetst de situatie: "2021 is een overgangsjaar, we focussen ons meer op 2022. We zullen niets laten liggen en geen compromissen sluiten bij de auto voor volgend seizoen. We kunnen ook niet zo heel veel meer doen aan de huidige wagen. We zijn strijdbaar en blijven pushen, we weten waar we staan met dit pakket. We gaan verder met de ontwikkeling van de FW43B, maar alleen als het niet ten koste gaat van de bolide voor 2022."

Een achterhoededuel met Haas F1 ligt in het verschiet, waarbij Williams iets betere papieren lijkt te hebben. Coureur Nicholas Latifi is in ieder geval te spreken over hoe zijn auto in Bahrein aanvoelde. "Om heel eerlijk te zijn heeft de wagen me ondanks de moeilijkheden positief verrast tijdens het eerste Grand Prix-weekend van dit seizoen, vergeleken met hoe de auto vorig jaar aanvoelde."

"Dat geeft ons hoop en optimisme voor Imola, waar de omstandigheden wat stabieler en meer voorspelbaar zijn en de lay-out van het circuit onze bolide beter zou moeten liggen. Ik ben benieuwd hoe we daar zullen presteren en misschien krijgen we dan een beter beeld van waar we ons de rest van dit seizoen zullen begeven in de pikorde", aldus de Canadees.

  Ik denk nog 6. RB en Mercedes gaan gewoon vol gas door hoor.
  
  iK snap dit niet. Je rijdt voor de fans en het kijkplezier en dan gooi je als team zijnde gewoon je wagen de prullenbak in. Alsof ze volgend jaar ineens wel een wereldwagen maken al die teams.

  Ze gaan in ieder geval een betere kans hebben dan dit jaar nog veel punten te pakken. Dus waarom zou je het niet doen? In 2009 en 2014 had WIlliams 2 keer het goed voor elkaar bij een regelwijziging.

Het stoppen met ontwikkelen heeft enkel te maken met gebrek aan financiële middelen. Ook niet verrassend dat na Haas Williams aan de beurt is. Schat in dat in deze volgorde de volgende zullen zijn. : Aston Martin, McLaren, Alfa Romeo, Renault, At. De rest gaat door tot het bittere eind.

  Waarom zou de rest tot het bittere eind doorgaan? Je weet dat teams tegenwoordig niet meer ongelimiteerd geld aan de ontwikkeling van het chassis kunnen besteden.

  Stoppen met ontwikkelen hoef niet te maken te hebben met gebrek aan financiële middelen. In het geval van Williams is het gewoon logisch beredeneren;
  Door willen gaan met resources steken in een auto die toch uitgefaseerd gaan worden?
  Of dezelfde resources stoppen in het ontwikkelen van de nieuwe auto?
  
  Die keuze is erg makkelijk omdat Williams geen aanspraak maakt op punten op basis van haar eigen snelheid. Daar hoeft echt geen reden van geldgebrek achter te schuilen. Gezond verstand eerder.

Wie wereldkampioen wil worden moet doorontwikkelen tot hij het is. Wie wil opschuiven in het middelveld ook. Alleen als je het niet meer ziet zitten en geen geld hebt stopt de ontwikkeling. Niet slim want bepaalde zaken kunnen ook volgend jaar bruikbaar zijn.
