Aston Martin bevestigt Nico Hülkenberg als reserverijder voor 2021

Het hing al een tijdje in de lucht, maar is nu eindelijk officieel bekendgemaakt: Nico Hülkenberg is door Aston Martin F1 Team vastgelegd als reserve- en ontwikkelingscoureur voor 2021. De 33-jarige Duitser heeft reeds namens de Britse renstal in de simulator kennisgemaakt met de AMR21. Hülkenberg zal dit jaar bij sommige races ook als reserverijder voor Mercedes fungeren.

Nico Hülkenberg staat klaar om in te springen als een van de reguliere coureurs bij Mercedes of Aston Martin dit seizoen om wat voor reden dan ook een Grand Prix moet missen. Vorig jaar mocht hij drie keer invallen bij Racing Point doordat Sergio Perez en Lance Stroll besmet raakten met het coronavirus. Dat krijgt dus een vervolg als reserve bij zowel Mercedes als Aston Martin.

"Ten eerste is het fijn om een overeenkomst te sluiten met tijd in overvloed", begint Hülkenberg. "Vorig jaar werd ik pas op het allerlaatste moment opgeroepen voor mijn eerste invalbeurt. Ik ben heel blij om weer met dit team samen te mogen werken. Uiteraard hoop ik dat Sebastian Vettel en Lance Stroll niets overkomt dit jaar, maar Aston Martin weet dat ze op me kunnen rekenen wanneer dat nodig blijkt te zijn. Ik ben volledig voorbereid om de uitdaging aan te gaan. Het is ook interessant om het team te helpen bij de ontwikkeling. Ik verheug me erop om weer snelle rondetijden uit mijn mouw te schudden."

Aston Martin-teambaas Otmar Szafnauer voegt toe: "Het doet ons deugd om Nico welkom terug te heten in een officiële functie bij het team, als reserve- en ontwikkelingscoureur. In deze moeilijke tijden is de nood voor een capabele en ervaren reserverijder hoog. Nico heeft vorig jaar bewezen dat hij op korte termijn in een auto kan stappen en dan een superprestatie neer kan zetten. Nu kunnen we meer aandacht besteden aan de voorbereiding en integratie van Nico binnen het team, dus hij kan het alleen maar beter doen als de situatie erom vraagt."

Zou leuk zijn als ze die ouwe meuk Vettel er over 2 a 3 races uitgooien, want dan heeft iedereen wel gezien wat de rest inmiddels wel weet en Hulkie het seizoen af laten maken.
