Leclerc: "Vettel liet mij het belang van details inzien"

Twee seizoenen lang was Charles Leclerc teamgenoot van viervoudig wereldkampioen Sebastian Vettel bij Scuderia Ferrari. Nadat de Duitser zijn contract niet werd verlengd, vertrok hij naar Aston Martin F1, wat voorheen Racing Point was. Charles Leclerc geeft toe dat hij Vettel wel mist in bepaalde aspecten, en laat weten dat het belangrijkste wat Vettel hem geleerd heeft, is het belang van details.

Ferrari kende in 2020 een tamelijk slecht seizoen; de Scuderia kon zichzelf niet hoger plaatsen dan zesde in het klassement - het slechtste resultaat sinds 1980. Met name Vettel werd aangetast door de minder competitieve SF1000, en kon slechts 33 punten scoren. Na dit slechte seizoen werd de viervoudig wereldkampioen vervangen door Carlos Sainz, welke afkomstig was van McLaren.

Na de eerste race van het 2021-seizoen werd Leclerc gevraagd wat het verschil was met de SF1000 en de SF21, daar liet Charles Leclerc het volgende over weten aan de Italiaanse Motorsport.com. "Het is een kwestie van hoe de auto voelt", zo vertelt de jonge Monegask. "Ik houd persoonlijk van een achter-as die wat beweeglijk is, omdat ik dat gebruik om de auto te roteren - andere coureurs hebben daar soms wat meer moeite mee. De SF1000 had bijvoorbeeld een onstabiele achterkant, maar dat was voor mij geen probleem. Hoe dit voor Seb (Sebastian Vettel) was kan ik niet over oordelen, want het is echt een kwestie van rijstijl."

Of Leclerc Vettel zou gaan missen na twee jaar teamgenoten te zijn, zei de Monegask het volgende. "Uiteraard, met name zijn ervaring ga ik missen", zo laat Leclerc weten. "Hij was erg goed in problemen oplossen, daar heb ik met name erg veel van geleerd. Uiteindelijk had ik ook door hoe detail-georiënteerd hij was, dat kon soms echt het verschil maken op de baan. Seb zijn hart zit op de goede plek en ik was altijd verbaasd door zijn mate van simpliciteit", zo concludeert Leclerc tegenover de Italiaanse Motorsport.com.

Charles Leclerc wist de eerste race van het 2021 Formule 1-seizoen als zesde te finishen. Even leek het er op alsof hij de vijfde stek kon pakken, maar werd in de slotfase van de race op het Bahrain International Circuit toch ingehaald door Sergio Perez welke van achteraan het veld kwam.

Hij was erg goed in problemen oplossen, daar heb ik met name erg veel van geleerd".

Hij was ook erg goed om in de problemen te komen, dus ik hoop dat je daar niet van geleerd hebt Charlie.

  Ja de meest vreselijke dingen. Sarcastisch kereltje die Leclerc. Als je een beetje tussen de regels door leest is dit echt een dolk in de rug van Vettel. Ze moeten m ontslaan. En Binotto ook, want die is geen haar beter.

Weet het niet hoor. Dit soort ophemelen van iemand die eruit is getrapt klinkt meer als een grafrede.. Hecht derhalve dan ook geen enke waarde toe aan deze woorden.

Volgens mij zegt Leclerc hier niets verkeerd en spreekt hij, al dan niet overgoten met een politiek correcte "saus", respectvol over Seb. Dat heeft hij afgelopen tijd wel vaker gedaan en andersom heeft Seb ook positieve woorden over Leclerc uitgesproken. Nogmaals, misschien is alles een beetje doorspekt met politieke correctheid, maar het is in mijn ogen ook niet nodig om te sneren naar oud teamgenoten.
