Miami probeert plooien glad te strijken voor een Grand Prix in 2022

De droom van Formule 1-eigenaar Liberty Media om een Grand Prix in Miami toe te voegen aan de kalender is weer een stapje dichter bij verwezenlijking. Rodney Harris, burgemeester van Miami Gardens, steunt het plan van de promotors van de race om de zorgen van inwoners over geluidshinder, milieuvervuiling en andere overlast weg te nemen.

Oorspronkelijk was een Grand Prix in het centrum van Miami de bedoeling, zoals de IndyCar en Formule E eerder hadden gedaan. Daar stak de lokale bevolking al een stokje voor. Vervolgens is een nieuwe locatie opgeworpen, rondom het stadion van NFL-team Miami Dolphins. Ook dat plan riep en roept nog steeds de nodige weerstand op, maar de organisatie en de stad zijn druk bezig om de laatste plooien glad te strijken.

Zo is een plan voorgedragen om 5 miljoen dollar in de economie te pompen, stageplekken voor inwoners van Miami te regelen en een programma voor wetenschap, technologie, engineering en wiskunde op poten te zetten. De gemeenteraad stemt hier woensdag over, maar de steun van Miami Gardens-burgemeester Harris zal waarschijnlijk voor goedkeuring zorgen.

Hierdoor zou Miami onderdeel uit kunnen maken van de Formule 1-kalender voor 2022, drie jaar later dan eigenlijk de intentie was.
