Mick Schumacher: "In verkeer blijft er 20 procent downforce over"

Haas F1-rookie Mick Schumacher heeft zich er tijdens de wintertest en het Grand Prix-weekend in Bahrein over verbaasd hoeveel downforce de huidige generatie Formule 1-wagens verliezen zodra ze vlak achter een andere auto komen te rijden. Het is een probleem waar de sport al langer mee kampt en de oorzaak dat inhalen zonder DRS zo ontzettend moeilijk is.

Mick Schumacher ondervond het in Bahrein aan den lijve. "Over het algemeen heb ik een heleboel nieuwe dingen geleerd en dat was al ter sprake gekomen tijdens de briefings. Maar erover praten is iets anders dan het ervaren. Ik heb veel opgestoken over de banden, dat was het meest nieuw voor mij. En ook de neerwaartse druk die we verloren bij de start. Van de totale downforce blijft in verkeer nog maar zo'n 20 procent over, heb ik gemerkt."

Schumacher reed zijn eerste Formule 1-race uit, teamgenoot Nikita Mazepin viel al in de eerste ronde van zijn debuutrace uit. Voor komend weekend in Imola ligt de nadruk op kilometers maken, stelt Haas F1-teambaas Günther Steiner. "De performance van het team en de auto, we weten al wat we daarvan kunnen verwachten. De verwachtingen voor het resultaat zijn dan ook niet hooggespannen."

"Onze twee coureurs hebben het in Bahrein goed gedaan. Natuurlijk, Nikita spinde en eindigde in de bandenstapels, waardoor de auto beschadigd raakte, en Mick spinde ook een keer, maar het weekend als geheel was een leermoment voor hen. We hebben meer kilometers en zoveel mogelijk ronden nodig, dan komt het wel goed. Het was één weekend van 23. We moeten ons blijven verbeteren en blijven leren, dat is de missie", aldus Steiner.

20% ? waarop is dat gebaseerd, dat het minder is lijkt me duidelijk maar 20% overhouden aan downforce lijkt mij wel heel erg weinig, al zeg ik niet dat het niet zo is , de stelligheid waarin er aangegeven wordt 20% moet ergens vandaan komen

  20% in het meest extreme geval misschien met opvolging van bochten kort achter elkaar. Op de rechte lijn zou het slipstreamen veel meer kracht hebben dan nu - dus 20% is inderdaad met een hele dikke korrel zout. . .

  Nou, dan zou de Haas dus minder last hebben in verkeer dan een RedBull. 100 punten downforce en dan maar 20% over hebben is voor Redbull een groter verlies dan voor een Haas met 50 punten downforce.

Gelukkig voor hem is hij met de Haas snel uit het verkeer en rijdt hij voornamelijk in de vrije lucht, dus heeft hij er niet zoveel last meer van.

Dat het twee rookies maakt het allemaal niet makkelijker, en natuurlijk zullen ze fouten maken en hopelijk daarvan leren. Maar om nu te zeggen dat ze het goed gedaan hebben is wel het andere uiterste.
Ik heb het al eens in een eerder nieuwsbericht gezegd, maar Gunther toont voor mij hiermee aan dat hij niet het juiste materiaal is om teambaas te zijn. Hij hoeft zijn rookies niet af te schieten, maar kritisch mag hij toch wel zijn op het optreden van zijn coureurs. Het is wel F1, geen opstapklasse meer.

  Er is een verschil in kritisch zijn intern (en dat is Günther) en wat je in de media zegt. Beide coureurs weten echt wel wat Günther van de eerste race vond en wat hij verwacht van de heren in de tweede race: de finish halen en kijken of ze de strijd aan kunnen gaan met Williams.
