Imola verlengt DRS-zone om meer inhaalacties mogelijk te maken

Het Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari te Imola is komend weekend gastheer voor de tweede Formule 1-race van 2021, de Grand Prix van Emilia-Romagna. Vorig jaar stond Imola voor het eerst sinds 2006 weer op de kalender, tot groot enthousiasme van coureurs en fans. De baan is met zijn snelle en uitdagende bochten en het glooiende landschap geliefd onder rijders en volgers.

Dat enthousiasme verstomde deels tijdens de race van afgelopen seizoen. Het circuit van Imola is misschien een schitterende locatie en prachtig om op te rijden, voor de kijker thuis viel er niet heel veel te beleven. Het duel tussen Max Verstappen en Valtteri Bottas vormde een zeldzaam hoogtepuntje en een van de weinige inhaalacties tijdens de editie van 2020.

In de Grand Prix van Emilia-Romagna werd namelijk maar zes keer ingehaald. In een poging om meer inhaalacties mogelijk te maken heeft de organisatie van het evenement in samenspraak met de internationale autosportbond FIA besloten om de enige DRS-zone op Imola voor dit weekend te verlengen. Dit zorgt voor een langere slipstream richting de eerste bochtencombinatie.

De DRS-zone begon vorig jaar op de start- en finishlijn, maar de achtervleugel zal komend weekend al ter hoogte van het begin van de pitstraat open te klappen zijn. Het detectiepunt is ook verlegd, van vlak na de tweede Rivazza-bocht naar vlak voor de eerste Rivazza-bocht. Hierdoor zou DRS vaker door coureurs geactiveerd moeten kunnen worden en dit dient om inhalen richting Tamburello te bevorderen.

Imola is 'n mooie baan.....maar niet voor F1. Hier moet de GT3 of DTM gaan rijden.

  Maar ik denk wel dat ik knap sjagerijnig zou zijn als ik wakker word naast een man met baard en paardestaartjes, teveel mascare en een verrot gebid. Dan ga ik me toch ernstig afvragen waar die nacht ervoor mijn snorkel zoal in gestoken is...

dit is denk ik in het nadeel van verstappen, aangenomen wordt dat hij weer de pole gaat pakken en hamilton heeft dan meer kans om max via deze extra lange drs zone terug te pakken tijdens de race.

Ik ben blij dat volgend jaar de auto's qua aerodynamica veel minder gevoelig zijn. Dan kunnen we wellicht ook snel afscheid nemen van DRS, want het is en blijft een kunstmatige ingreep die oneerlijk aanvoelt.
