Gemeenteraad Miami stemt in met plannen voor Grand Prix in 2022

Miami heeft een flinke stap in de richting van een eerste Grand Prix in 2022 gezet. De gemeenteraad van Miami Gardens heeft de voorstellen om ontevreden inwoners tegemoet te komen goedgekeurd. De Formule 1 had eigenlijk in 2019 al in Miami willen racen, maar de organisatie van het evenement trekt al twee jaar ten strijde tegen de protesterende lokale bevolking.

Vastgoedmagnaat Stephen Ross sloot een contract met de Formule 1 om vanaf 2019 een Grand Prix in Miami te promoten. Voor het circuit is een lay-out ontworpen dat zich slingert rondom het Hard Rock Stadium van NFL-team Miami Dolphins, beide eigendom van Ross. Inwoners en milieuorganisaties verzetten zich sindsdien echter - met succes - tegen de komst van de Formule 1.

Ze konden daarbij ook rekenen op de steun van burgemeester Rodney Harris, die zo zijn bedenkingen had bij een Grand Prix. Harris is echter overgestapt naar het andere kamp. Hij is overtuigd door de voorstellen die Ross en zijn team hebben ingediend om het ongenoegen weg te nemen. Dat is overigens niet bij iedereen gelukt, want de gemeenteraadsleden moesten voor hun stemming nog twee uur naar tegensputterende omwonenden luisteren.

Toch is voor de resolutie gestemd om een Grand Prix in Miami mogelijk te maken in 2022. Daarin staat onder meer dat op schooldagen niet voor 14.30 uur plaatselijke tijd gereden zal worden, zoals actie op de baan ook na de zonsondergang uit den boze is. Dat maakt het inplannen van de vrije trainingen op vrijdag lastig. Daarnaast belooft Ross 5 miljoen in de lokale gemeenschap te investeren; 1 miljoen na de eerste Grand Prix in Miami en vervolgens 444.444,44 dollar na elk van de volgende negen edities.

Leuk voor die Amerikanen, krijgen ze 2 x per jaar eens echte topcoureurs in actie te zien in plaats van al die afgedankte B-coureurs bij de INdy series.

  Nou ik zat op de lijst met coureurs van de Indy door te nemen en dat was echt nog een klap minder dan de FE. Coureurs met te weinig talent voor de F1, afgedankte F1 coureurs, of coureurs waar binnenkort een grote Abraham pop in de tuin staat.
