Gerucht in F1-paddock: Russell vrij van contract als Mercedes hem geen stoel geeft in 2022

George Russell vertelde drie weken geleden dat hij na zijn invalbeurt eind vorig jaar voor Lewis Hamilton, die moest toekijken vanaf de kant vanwege een coronabesmetting, geen contact meer met hem had. Daar komt hij nu op terug, zo vertelde hij in Imola tegen de pers.

Volgens het gerucht bevroor de relatie tussen de twee toen duidelijk werd dat Mercedes-junior Russell de potentiële vervanger is voor de zevenvoudig wereldkampioen, mocht hij vertrekken bij het Duitse team. Russell zegt over de kwestie: "De vraag die mij werd gesteld was: 'Heb je na Bahrein met Lewis gepraat?' En ik antwoordde: "Nee, dat heb ik niet gedaan." Net zoals ik dat bij de meeste Grand Prix niet doe."

'Maar als we elkaar zien, praten we natuurlijk. Dat was altijd zo en is dat nog steeds. Mijn relatie met Lewis is op geen enkele manier anders dan voorheen, er is geen probleem tussen ons", benadrukte de Williams-coureur.

Geen Mercedes-stoel in 2022

Andere geruchten in de paddock suggereren echter dat als Toto Wolff in 2022 geen plek heeft bij Mercedes voor zijn protege, Russell vrij is om bij ieder ander team te tekenen.

De Brit zelf wil er echter niet veel over kwijt: "Ik zit sinds 2016 in de Mercedes-familie. De situatie is sindsdien niet veranderd. Ik moet mijn prestaties op het circuit laten zien om mijn kans te verdienen en ik denk nergens anders aan."

Tsja...wie van de Mercedes protégés heeft nou daadwerkelijk een stoeltje bemacht bij het hoofdteam? Ocon niet, Wehrlein niet. Dus het verbaast me niks als ze Bottas verlengen.

'Vrij van contract' .? Klinkt misschien goed... maar is dat niet zoiets als 'ze willen 'm niet". ?
Ik kan me dit niet voorstellen. Russel is één van de beste coureurs op de baan.

  ja en dat weet ie zelf ook. Dus zal ie niet zo maar weer een klein contractje tekenen en zal Mercedes dus met veel geld en/of een stoeltje over de brug moeten komen om m langer te binden.

  @roy....inderdaad ik was tsunoda ff vergeten.
  Stel je voor dat Merc hem niet stalt en hij weg wil bij Williams....dan is er geen topplaatsje meer voor hem.
  Maar aan de andere kant is alles beter dan Williams. Maar goed , eerst volgend jaar afwachten dan kan zowaar Williams een sprongetje maken.

  Klopt dan heb je een hele sterke line-up. En mocht hij echt vrijkomen dan is het altijd een optie. Maar eerst maar even kijken wat dit seizoen brengt, Zal er ook wel allemaal vanaf hangen.

Misschien gaat Mercedes wel gewoon door met Lewis en Bottas, waarom zouden ze willen veranderen als ze blijven winnen. En Lewis wil ook nog doorgaan.
