Vettel weigert COVID-19 vaccinatie met goede reden: "Het is mijn beurt nog niet"

Sinds begin vorig Formule 1-seizoen wordt de sport geteisterd door het coronavirus. Besmette coureurs of teamleden mogen de paddock niet betreden en/of moeten in quarantaine. Ook betekende het dat meerdere races uitvielen - zo ook de geplande eerste race van het 2021-seizoen in Melbourne. Sebastian Vettel heeft recentelijk toegegeven dat hij al de mogelijkheid had om zich te laten vaccineren voor het coronavirus, maar de 33-jarige Duitser heeft aangegeven deze te hebben geweigerd, en geeft hier een opmerkelijke reden voor.

Tegenover het Duitse RTL geeft Vettel duidelijk aan waarom hij de mogelijkheid om te vaccineren heeft afgeslagen. "De Formule 1 had de mogelijkheid om in Bahrein gevaccineerd te worden", zo vertelt Vettel. "Maar ik heb er bewust voor gekozen om dit niet te doen omdat het mijn beurt nog niet is." Vettel vraagt zich af of het vaccin niet beter gebruikt kan worden voor iemand die het harder nodig heeft dan hij zelf, diegene zou het eerder moeten krijgen dan hij, zo vindt hij zelf.

"Het is een principekwestie", zo vertelt Vettel verder. "Er zijn zoveel mensen die gevaccineerd willen worden. Veel mensen wachten er nog op, maar het komt er op neer dat jonge mensen gewoon minder risico lopen dan oudere mensen. Ik ga heus gevaccineerd raken, maar pas wanneer het mijn beurt is."

Sergio Perez en Carlos Sainz zijn, bijvoorbeeld, al gevaccineerd. Andere coureurs kregen de optie, maar zeiden dat hun teamleden deze in plaats van hen moesten krijgen. AlphaTauri is het enige Formule 1-team welke haar teamleden heeft verplicht zich te laten vaccineren. Ook Pirelli heeft alle medewerkers laten vaccineren.

Vettel liet ook nog weten dat de sport de vaccins eerder zou krijgen dan de lokale bevolking. Dat zou betekenen dat elke vaccin voor buitenlanders één vaccin minder is voor mensen die wonen in het koninkrijk van Bahrein.

En daar heeft Vettel helemaal gelijk in. Ik vind het ook bijzonder dat de Nederlandse olympiërs nu al gevaccineerd worden terwijl de zwakke groepen voor een groot deel nog gedaan moeten worden. Topsporters lopen bijna geen risico met Covid, die kunnen prima hun beurt afwachten.

  Ik erger mij er ook enorm om dat olympiërs gevaccineerd worden. Ik ken mensen die in de risico groep zitten en vanwege hun leeftijd nog niet aan de beurt zijn, hoe wil men dat tegenover deze groep verantwoorden.

  Ik vind het juist goed dat onze olympiers de kans krijgen gevaccineerd te worden zodat wij straks van hun topprestaties kunnen genieten in Japan.
  Ik maak mij veel meer druk over die 60 plussers die vaccinaties weigeren maar straks wel met hun dikke lichaam op de IC liggen en daardoor de rest van welwillend NL langer op slot zitten.

  Inderdaad no bullshit. Stond deze week een artikel over een man die het az vaccin had geweigerd om de minuscule kans (ja rond 1 op de 1.000.000) op de welbekende bijwerking. Man had nu mega spijt want lag in het ziekenhuis... ter illustratie had hij de foto van zijn longen vrij gegeven.... je hebt geen medische kennis nodig om die te beoordelen...
