GPDA-directeur Alex Wurz: "Natuurlijke track limits zoals grindbakken zullen beter werken"

Volgens de directeur van de Grand Prix Drivers Association, Alex Wurz, moet de Formule 1 de voortdurende controverse over track limits oplossen door duidelijke en strikte regels af te dwingen. Zoals velen in de Formule 1 die klagen over de huidige inconsistente regels, denkt voormalig coureur Wurz dat de ideale oplossing zou zijn om de grenzen van de circuits te definiëren met natuurlijke kenmerken.

"Ik ben altijd al een vijand geweest van kunstmatige track limits. We hebben natuurlijke track limits nodig. Gras of grind werkt veel beter", zo zei hij tegen ORF.

Het probleem, zei hij, is dat het niet geschikt zou zijn voor sommige andere raceklassen die door de circuits worden gebruikt. Wurz zei ook dat de Formule 1 niet naar het andere uiterste kan gaan door de coureurs meer van het circuit te laten gebruiken. "Als alle coureurs expres heel wijd gaan, zou dat de veiligheidsberekeningen van de racedirecteur ongeldig maken. Je hebt dus geen keus", zei hij.

Sainz adviseert FIA

Ferrari-coureur Carlos Sainz herhaalt daarom de oplossing van Wurz - dat zelfs kleine overtredingen voor het met alle vier de wielen over de witte lijnen gaan, worden bestraft.

"Ik heb mijn mening al aan de FIA gegeven", zei Sainz. "We moeten elke bocht dezelfde regels hanteren. Het maakt niet uit of we de witte lijn gebruiken of iets anders, maar er moet een grens zijn. Ik denk dat alle coureurs deze mening delen."

Waarom zijn grindbakken destijds ook al weer uit de gratie geraakt? Had dat iets met veiligheid te maken? Ik ben dat even kwijt, eerlijk gezegd.

  De kans was te groot dat de wagen over de kop zou gaan.
  
  Maar je hoeft ook geen grote grindbak te maken. Gewoon direct naast de baan een stukje gras of grind van 1 of 2 meter breed en daarna weer asfalt. Leg je dat stukje gras een centimeter lager dan het asfalt. Dan denken de rijders er wel twee keer over na om buiten de baan te gaan.
  
  Kerbs ook smaller maken. Dus dat je er net op past met Twee wielen nog aan de binnenkant van de baan.

Niet overal grindbakken, want niet elk klein foutje moet afgestraft worden dat je vast in het grind staat....

  Juist wel. Juist dat zorgt er voor dat de formule 1, of racen ansich, weer een echte uitdaging wordt. Een foutje maken kost je punten en zorgt er voor dat iemand ten alle tijden op zijn hoede moet zijn om deze niet te maken.
  Zo was het voorheen ook toen de grindbakken nog standaard waren. En zo mag het nu ook weer zijn, als het aan mij ligt.

Wat een aanfluiting; omdat de FIA hun eigen regels niet objectief en consequent na kan leven moeten de curcuits weer aangepast worden omdat een grindbak dat wel is?
