Kimi Raikkonen: "Genadeloos Imola is zoals circuits horen te zijn"

Het Grand Prix-weekend op het Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari te Imola kende enkele rode vlag-situaties en behoorlijk harde crashes. Elk foutje van de coureurs werd afgestraft op het krappe en uitdagende circuit, waar gras en grindbakken de baan nog omringen en de omheining nergens ver weg is.

Een schril contrast met de meer moderne circuits, waar vaak gigantische uitloopstroken van asfalt te vinden zijn. Alfa Romeo-coureur Kimi Raikkonen draait al twintig jaar mee in de Formule 1 en is iemand van de oude stempel. De wereldkampioen van 2007 vindt het juist mooi om op old-school­ circuits als Imola te racen.

Aan Racefans.net vertelde de Fin: "Imola is niet vergevingsgezind en kent geen genade. Dat is zoals circuits horen te zijn en zoals circuits voorheen ook altijd waren. Daarom zie je op dit soort banen wat vaker een rode vlag-situatie en meer dingen verkeerd gaan. Maar dat hoort juist bij autosport, het is inherent aan racen."

Raikkonen leek een mooie negende plaats in de wacht te slepen op Imola, maar door een tijdstraf na afloop van de race zakte hij terug tot een positie buiten de punten.

    Kimi heeft in mijn ogen helemaal gelijk. Racen behoort tot op de limiet te gaan, balanceren tussen hero en zero acties. Grindbakken en gras horen daarbij.

      Ik zou het meest logische vinden om naast de baan een strook van 2 meter te hebben met bijna 0 grip... gras bijvoorbeeld om ze binnen de lijntjee te laten kleuren.

      Dan 20 meter asfalt om rijders met onschuldige tankslappers of een beuk van Maldonado te mogen overleven.

      Daarna de grindbak. Voor de echte harde klappers. Uiteraard de meters zoals ik t roep in verhouding tot wat mogelijk is qua ruimte.

    Grindbakken zijn er gekomen na een crash waar iemand ondersteboven flink wat meters door het grind school. Ben even vergeten wie het was. Maar was zo'n moment waarvan ik dacht. Die is er niet meer. Het hoofd van de rijder was volledig ingegraven. Uiteindelijk was de rijder nog in leven. Maar bij een zijdelingse schuiver was de nek zeer waarschijnlijk gebroken geweest. Ook indien de schuiver tot het eind van de grindbak zou doorschuiven zou de man waarschijnlijk zijn overleden. Wat me bijstaat is dat daarna de circuits steeds meer werden aangepast.
    Echter hebben we redelijk recent Hubert verloren op spa juist omdat we daar geen grindbakken meer hebben. Rijders knallen buiten de baan vol door.

    Ik zie voor wat veiligheid betreft geen echte oplossing die veilig werkt.

      Ik weet het echt niet meer eigenlijk. Ik vind je forum naam wel erg cool trouwens. Peterson was misschien wel de eerste rijder waar ik fan van was, hoewel ik ook fan werd van Rindt. Na diens dood wilde ik dat Rindt kampioen zou worden.

      Hmmm. Ik weet niet meer of deze crash de aanleiding was, maar Damon Hill was in het grind begraven in Portugal. Maar dat was niet in de race. Kan me niet voorstellen want dit was tijdens een vrije training en die heb ik dus niet gezien zelf.

    Zeker en vast.
    Wel blij dat de regels zijn aangepast en hij de volgende keer voor hetzelfde vergrijp geen 30 seconden aan zijn laars krijgt gelapt. Het hadden voor zowel Kimi als Alfa heel belangrijke punten geweest die hen nu zijn ontnomen. . .
