Felipe Massa: "Mercedes moet George Russell een kans geven"

George Russell is een supercoureur die een kans verdient om voor het Mercedes-fabrieksteam te racen. Dat is de mening van voormalig Ferrari-coureur Felipe Massa, die ter gelegenheid van zijn 40ste verjaardag een interview gaf aan La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Toen hem werd gevraagd naar Valtteri Bottas, die dit jaar moeite heeft om te matchen met Lewis Hamilton, zei Massa dat hij denkt dat de prestatie van de Fin verband houdt met zijn spirituele kant.

"Het is niet makkelijk om jezelf te vergelijken met een kampioen als Lewis Hamilton", zei de Braziliaan.

Op pole position om Bottas op te volgen, staat de 23-jarige George Russell, die een spraakmakende crash en confrontatie met de huidige Mercedes-coureur op Imola had.

"George is een supercoureur, ook al heeft hij een fout gemaakt in Imola. Ik waardeer het feit dat hij zich verontschuldigde nadat hij was gekalmeerd. Het was een teken dat hij meer volwassen wordt. Hij verdient een kans en ik hoop dat Mercedes hem op een gegeven moment die kans geeft", zei Massa.

    als mercedes ballen heeft laten ze russel instappen in die 2de auto en dan zullen we zien wat die jankert hamilton waard is maar dat durven ze niet omdat dan die jankert hamilton een hoop glans verliest ik geloof erin dat russel die angsthaas nog wel een lesje kan leren

      Ik denk dat Lewis inmiddels al meerdere malen heeft laten zien dat hij de beste is!
      Ik vrees voor je dat Russel hem niet van zijn voetstuk zal brengen.

      Dr man bewees afgelopen weekend weer wat die waard is. Hij en Max zijn gewoon een klasse apart.

      Russel is meer Norris en Leclerc kwaliteit, dat is super goed maar geen max en Lewis goed

      Ik vind de progressie van Lando Norris anders vele malen indrukwekkender dan Russell. Russell maakt nog steeds dezelfde domme beginnersfouten tijdens de race, terwijl Norris zich een teamspeler en een leider toont. Ik zou het alleen erg jammer vinden om hem te zien vertrekken bij McLaren.

      Waarom zou Norris vertrekken bij McLaren? Zeker de komende jaren zie ik dat niet gebeuren. Norris past juist heel goed bij McLaren en McLaren maakt duidelijk stappen vooruit de laatste paar jaren. Ik zie voor beide partijen geen reden om afscheid te nemen van elkaar.

      Uiteraard passen ze goed bij elkaar, maar de lokroep van Mercedes zou moeilijk te weerstaan zijn, lijkt mij. Uiteindelijk wil je als coureur kampioen worden.

      Maar dat is louter theoretisch: wat ik probeerde te zeggen was dat van het aanstormende talent Norris momenteel een sterkere indruk maakt dan Russell.
