Lewis Hamilton: "Ik ben van plan om volgend jaar nog in F1 te racen"

Lewis Hamilton kwam in de week na de Grand Prix van Emilia-Romagna nogmaals in actie op het Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari te Imola. Op het programma stond een test met een Mercedes W10 uit 2019 voor bandenleverancier Pirelli in het kader van de ontwikkeling van de 18 inch-banden voor volgend jaar.

Normaal gesproken is Hamilton niet zo happig op testen, maar met het oog op 2022 wilde hij zelf heel graag met de prototypes van de nieuwe banden aan de slag. Dat hij vorige week in Imola testte is dan ook een duidelijk teken dat de zevenvoudig wereldkampioen nog niet klaar is met de Formule 1.

Hamilton: "Ik stap nooit vrijwillig naar voren voor testdagen, dit was waarschijnlijk voor het eerst in lange tijd dat ik dat wel gedaan heb. Ik had er op de dag zelf wel spijt van toen ik 's ochtends wakker werd. Verdorie, dacht ik. Maar gelukkig is Imola een geweldig circuit, dus ik heb genoten van de testdag en het weer was goed. Ik ben van plan om ook volgend jaar nog in de Formule 1 te racen en wilde hier onderdeel van uitmaken, ik wilde Pirelli helpen."

De Brit was redelijk te spreken over zijn eerste kennismaking met de 18 inch-banden. "Alle coureurs pleiten al langer voor banden met meer performance. Het was belangrijk om te voelen wat het uitgangspunt van Pirelli is en waar ze eventueel nog aanpassingen moeten doorvoeren om te zorgen dat er meer mechanische grip vanuit de banden komt en de slijtage minder is. Het was een goede test en pas de eerste stap met de nieuwe banden. Maar het startpunt is niet verkeerd."

  Met Lewis Hamiltom heb ik hetzelfde als Marc Marquez in wegrace & Ogier in rally... totaal niet mijn type mensen, maar om hun racekunde kan je gewoon niet om heen. Alleen maar respect voor wat ze achter t stuur doen.

  Hamilton is de beste formule 1 coureur aller-tijden. Hij hoort thuis op de grid zo lang hij dat wil!
  
  Ik hoop/verwacht op een Hamilton-Russel line up bij Mercedes in 2022. Ook sluit ik een overstap naar McLaren niet uit voor Hamilton. Na een sabbatical ofzo of na nog een jaarcontract bij Mercedes

  @Tuurlijk: ik ben geen Ganilton-fan, maar de statistieken spreken wat mij betreft boekdelen. Hamilton is de meest succesvolle en daarmee ook de beste coureur aller tijden. En ik hoop dat we dit ook ooit over ‘ons Max’ kunnen zeggen!

Hangt ook mede van de contractonderhandelingen af. Mercedes is ook niet gek. Misschien toch naar Ferrari..?

  Wellicht nog een 1 jarige deal met Mercedes, maar dan zullen ze toch eindelijk (hoop ik?) Nottas lozen en Russell naast Lewis zetten
