Valtteri Bottas blij met eerste pole position in 2021: "Kreeg de banden goed op temperatuur"

De kwalificatie voor de Grand Prix van Portugal leverde een verrassende man op pole position op. Waar Lewis Hamilton duidelijk de overhand leek te hebben in de eerste twee kwalificatiesessies was het Valtteri Bottas die op de eerste run op de Soft-banden zeven duizendsten sneller was dan zijn teamgenoot. Aangezien Max Verstappen een tiende sneller was in zijn eerste ronde, maar zijn tijd werd verwijderd vanwege het overschrijden van de track limieten in bocht 4 en voor de tweede run de wind sterk opzette bleek het minimale verschil met Hamilton genoeg voor pole position.

Bottas reageerde tevreden na de kwalificatie: “Het is een goed gevoel om nog eens op pole position te staan, want het was een tijd geleden. Het was fijn om weer eens een goede kwalificatie neer te zetten, ik had de eerste races problemen om de banden in de juiste temperatuurzone te krijgen, maar vandaag lukte het goed genoeg. Dit geeft me de beste uitgangspositie voor morgen.”

Bottas verklaarde dat Mercedes al het hele weekend problemen had om de Soft-banden goed werkend te krijgen: "Het gevoel met de Soft-banden was het hele weekend al tegenvallend. Net als vorig jaar probeerden we de laatste run in Q3 met de Medium-band, maar toen was de wind sterker geworden, dus toen kreeg ik de Medium-banden niet meer op temperatuur. Morgen moeten we ons focussen op de start en daarna proberen de Medium-band zo lang mogelijk werkend te houden."

Ja red bull kreeg het niet voor elkaar door zijn foutje met track limits wat in mijn ogen niet echt tijdwinst was had hij de eerste plaats kunnen pakken. Daarna kwam er meer wint opzetten en kwamen ze niet meer aan deze tijden. Mercedes heeft het hier in Portugal beter voor elkaar. Red Bull heeft problemen met de banden.
