George Russell denkt de Williams naar fraaie punten te kunnen rijden in Portimão

Hij kreeg applaus van zijn monteurs bij Williams tijdens het binnen rijden van de pitstraat na een sterke kwalificatie waarbij hij de elfde startplek veroverde. George Russell denkt dan ook vanmiddag hoge ogen te kunnen gooien tijdens de Portugese Grand Prix in Portimão.

Met zijn sterke kwalificatie gaf Russell het team van Williams hun beste kwalificatie sinds 2018. Punten scoren is nu zijn doel.

Hij is daarover positief gestemd: "Onze racesnelheid lijkt sterker dan onze snelheid tijdens kwalificaties, om eerlijk te zijn. We hebben sowieso de snelste auto op het rechte stuk en dat gaat ons helpen om aanvallen af te houden. We moeten zorgen voor een start zonder problemen. We hebben de kans dus laten we afwachten hoe het uitpakt."

Tijdens de vorige race in Imola crashte de Brit keihard uit de race nadat hij probeerde Valterri Bottas in te halen in een gevecht om de negende plek.

Vanmiddag moet dat anders, beseft Russell. "We starten op de medium-band. Onze rivalen voor ons zullen op de zachtere band starten, en dat is geen geweldige race-band. Kortom: We zitten in een geweldige situatie."

Vanmiddag om 16:00 uur doven de lichten boven het rechte stuk voor de Grand Prix van Portugal.
