Ferrari geeft fout toe met strategie in Portimao

Het team van Ferrari heeft een fout gemaakt met de strategie van Carlos Sainz tijdens de Grand Prix van Portugal. De Spanjaard scoorde in de kwalificatie een knappe P5, maar kon deze goede uitgangspositie niet verzilveren door de verkeerde bandentactiek. De 'El Matador' werd 11de en viel daardoor net buiten de punten. De laatste keer gebeurde dat vorig jaar in Rusland.

Het doel van Ferrari was om de McLaren van Lando Norris onder druk te zetten. Het plan was om twee verschillende strategieën toe te passen. Charles Leclerc startte vanaf P8 op de mediums en hoefde daarna alleen nog te switchen naar de hardste compound. Sainz begon op softs en stapte na zijn eerste stop over naar de mediums. Dat was voor Sainz achteraf geen daverend succes.

Inaka Rueda, de hoofdstrateeg bij de Scuderia, legt uit wat er misging. ''De twee rijders begonnen met verschillende type banden. Na de safety car bevonden de twee achter Norris en met de strategie wilden we de race voor de McLaren-coureur zo lastig mogelijk maken. We dachten dat de medium band een logische keuze was voor in de race. Toch hadden sommige rijders en vooral Carlos last van veel slijtage. Toen we de stop maakte in ronde 20, dachten we dat we goed zouden eindigen met die band, maar hij verloor uiteindelijk veel tijd door verlies van grip.''

Ook Carlos Sainz trekt zelf het boetekleed voor een teleurstellende verloop van de race. ''We hebben het verkeerd gedaan met strategie en teveel gepushed met de banden. We gingen voor de undercut maar het wierp geen vruchten af. Achteraf gezien had ik niet gelijk moeten pushen en alles moeten proberen om een positie te winnen. We hadden dat beter niet kunnen doen.''

Niet zoals jaren geleden de ene rijder opofferen voor de ander met de strategie.

Het is wel te prijzen dat Ferrari hier voor 2 verschillende strategien ging om hun concurrentie onder druk te zetten. Het "mooie" (niet mooi voor Carlos) is dat we dan nu ook zien welke strategie leidde tot grip en niet dat we onderaan de streep in hindsight konden zeggen dat de bandenkeuze geen ene moer uitmaakt.

  Klopt helemaal! Die mentaliteitsverandering is al een tijdje aan de gang en daar zie je zoals steeds pas later de eerste tekenen van.
  
  Die (persoonlijke) no blaim cultuur en neuzen in dezelfde richting gaat hen in 2022 nog meer vooraan brengen.
  
  Blij dat die 'binnenkort´ terug gaan staan waar ze horen - bij de topteams.

  @red slow Viel mij ook al op. Vind dit een positieve ontwikkeling voor Ferrari. Ook hoe ze momenteel met beide coureurs omgaan, niet echt een uitgesproken nummer een rijder vind ik mooi om te zien.
  Ik vind ook dat Sainz het vooralsnog prima doet bij Ferrari. Zit er goed bij (even los van de gekozen strategie in deze race) en oogt fris en gretig. Denk ook wel dat dat onderling prima klikt tussen Leclerc en Sainz, als buitenstaander gezien.
