Fernando Alonso: "George Russell is kampioen van de toekomst'

George Russell gaat vaak genoeg op het hoogste treetje van het podium terecht komen dat hij zich op een gegeven moment wereldkampioen Formule 1 mag noemen. Dat voorspelt Fernando Alonso, zelf tweevoudig wereldkampioen Formule 1.

Alonso en Russell ruilden na de Grand Prix van Monaco elkaars helm zodat zij die thuis in hun glazen vitrinekast kunnen zetten als onderdeel van hun persoonlijke verzameling.

Racelegende Alonso schreef op zijn helm voor de Williams coureur: "You rock! Future world champ". De 23-jarige Russell toont de helm met trots via zijn Twitter-account en schrijft erbij: "Dit betekent veel voor mij. Gracias, legende!"

Verder zei Fernando Alonso tijdens de Grand Prix van Monaco dat er veel getalenteerde rijders in de Formule 1 rondrijden momenteel.

Alonso: "Zij worden allemaal ontzettend goed voorbereid in de opleidingstrajecten voor coureurs, waardoor zij worden geholpen om op hele jonge leeftijd hun werk goed kunnen doen."

Hij vervolgt: "Van die talenten is George Russell degenen die mij elk weekend verbaast. Hoe hij zijn WIlliams-machine bestuurt: zonder fouten. Ik ben echt verrast door zijn natuurlijke snelheid. Dus als ik al een naam zou moeten noemen, dan is het die van Russell."

Nieuwste generatie komt op stoom

De jongste generatie komt flink op stoom en liet zich in Monaco zien op het podium, waar Max Verstapppen samen met Lando Norris en Carlos Sainz de handen mochten schudden met prins Albert.

Carlos Sainz merkte dan ook op dat dit podium het ultieme bewijs is dat de Formule 1 in veilige handen is bij de nieuwe generatie.

Ferrari-topman Stefano Domenicali zei tegen de Italiaanse roze sportkrant La Gazetta dello Sport dat dat een waarheid als een koe is.

Domenicali: "Formule 1 heeft een nieuwe opleving gezien die nogal van belang is, zelfs voor de jongste generaties die de racerij nog niet eerder hebben gevolgd. Jongere coureurs spreken de taal van hun fans en daarbij gebruiken zij sociale media met veel meer gemak dan dat hun oudere collega's dat doen."

Zeker een groot talent. Doet soms dingen in die williams die onmogelijk lijken. Maar ik heb vooral het gevoel dat hij wel een klein beetje overschat wordt. en dat komt denk ik vooral door die ene race in de Mercedes.

Zo vind ik een Norris/Leclerc echt niet minder. als hij in een dominante wagen terecht komt gaat hij zeker titels pakken, Maar daar lopen er meer van rond. Hij doet me altijd een beetje denken aan coulthard. Hele snelle rijder maar geen 1 die de boeken ingaat als een kampioen. Is ook helemaal geen schande.

we gaan het zien. Ik denk wel de logische opvolger van Hamilton bij Mercedes. Al vrees ik dat ze eerst vol voor Max gaan mocht Lewis stoppen.

Hij versloeg Bottas (min of meer) in zijn eerste race voor Mercedes, dus hij is niveau Hamilton zonder twijfel.
Of hij een kl***zak genoeg is als het erop aan komt, moet ik nog zien.

  Ja, tijdens die wedstrijd waar voor Mercedes alles fout ging wat maar fout kon gaan , zo reed Bottas door een fout van het team , bijna de hele wedstrijd op dezelfde band , dan hoef je geen sterke teamgenoot te zijn om dan te winnen van Bottas...

  Bottas was in de quali beter en kwam slecht weg bij de start. Bottas was sneller, echter door sc en teamfouten is het gelopen zoals het is.
  En daarnaast is die mer niet nieuw voor rus. Rus heeft geneog erin mogen rijden.
  En om nou te zeggen dat hij bot verslagen heeft, past in het rijtje, rus ophemelen te laste van bottas en dus Lewis.

  @sailor ja ok maar Bottas startte op een waardeloze manier (wielspin en geknoei in de bocht), kon vervolgens Russel echt niet bijbenen in de race. Hij kreeg een beroerde hap te verwerken van zijn team, maar Russel werd algemeen beschouwd als duidelijk beter.

  Zeker weten. Ik zeg het al een hele tijd dat George samen met Leclerc en Max de top van de komende 10 jaar is. George twijfelde op Imola ook niet lang om Bottas op faire maar risicovolle manier in te halen. Liep niet goed af door Bottas schuld imo maar het toont wel dat hij alles heeft en zelfs de lat hoger zal leggen voor iedereen.

Laat ik nou net die eene race van Russel in de MB niet gezien hebben.....dus gezien wat ik gezien heb is het een leuke rijder op een Ocon niveau zullen we maar zeggen ;-)

Kwalificeren kan Russell. Maar de punten worden met de race verdeeld en daar ben ik zo niet erg van George onder de indruk. Vind hem erg overschat.
